Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Overview
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is set to release on February 5, 2026, for Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. It is a remake of the original Dragon Quest VII, released in Japan in 2000 and in North America in 2001. An earlier remake was also released for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan (2013) and later in North America, Europe, and Australasia (2016).
Starting on the isolated and peaceful Estard Island, players take on the role of Arus, a fisherman’s young son. Alongside his friends Prince Kiefer and Maribel, Arus discovers an ancient ruin containing mysterious fragments that, when put together, create magical tablets with the power to open gateways to different lands in the past.
The trio, with the help of friends made along the way, must journey into these unfamiliar, crisis-stricken locations and usher them into the present world. On their journey, our adventurers will face great evils and fight countless foes as they unravel the greater mystery behind the exiled lands’ catastrophes and work to fulfill their quest for global restoration.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Gameplay

The remake reimagines Dragon Quest VII’s 2D designs and environments created by the legendary Akira Toriyama, in hand-crafted 3D. Gameplay retains the original's turn-based combat but also carries over some upgrades from the 3DS remake while adding its own modern improvements.
Gameplay is split into two main parts: overworld traversal and combat. In the overworld, players are free to explore, interact with NPCs, take on side quests, and look for fragments that will unlock more banished lands. Once players find enough fragments, they will venture into the forgotten locales, where they are tasked with solving each’s unique crisis.
Not without resistance, our heroes will face off against many different types of enemies, including wild animals, undead creatures, dragons, demons, and more. In battle, characters can use melee weapons, ranged attacks, and even magic to gain the upper hand. With each location rescued, players take one step closer to both restoring the modern world and facing off against the evil behind its potential erasure.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Characters
Hero

Hero is the protagonist of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined and its previous iterations. Continuing the series trend of being a blank slate for players to name and insert themselves into, he is the son of a fisherman from Pilchard Bay who has a penchant for exploring.
Aishe

Aishe is a young woman from the Roamer tribe who is skilled in both dancing and sword fighting. She is determined to resurrect the figure known as the Almighty and joins the party to achieve this.
Maribel

Maribel is a childhood friend of Hero and Kiefer who tagged along for their quest. While she can be quite rough around the edges, she is a sweet girl underneath and cares for her friends.
Kiefer

Kiefer is the prince of Estard and Hero’s best friend. He is determined to unearth the mysteries of the world, always exploring around the island with Hero.
Ruff

Ruff is a young boy always with his wolf companion. While he seems innocent and naive, he has animal-like instincts that make him a formidable fighter.
