Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Overview
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is set to release on February 5, 2026, as a remake of the original Dragon Quest VII released back in 2000 in Japan and 2001 in North America. An earlier remake was also released for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan (2013) and later in North America, Europe, and Australasia (2016).
Starting out on the isolated and peaceful Estard Island, players take on the role of Arus, a fisherman’s young son. Alongside his friends Prince Kiefer and Maribel, Arus discovers an ancient ruin containing mysterious fragments that, when put together, create magical tablets with the power to open gateways to different lands in the past.
The trio, with the help of friends made along the way, must journey into these unfamiliar, crisis-stricken locations and usher them into the present world. On their journey, our adventurers will face great evils and fight countless foes as they unravel the greater mystery behind the exiled lands’ catastrophes and work to fulfill their quest for global restoration.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Gameplay

The remake reimagines Dragon Quest VII’s 2D designs and environments, originally created by the legendary Akira Toriyama, in hand-crafted 3D. Gameplay retains the original's turn-based combat but will also carry over some upgrades from the 3DS remake while adding its own modern improvements.
Gameplay is split into two main parts: overworld traversal and combat. In the overworld, players are free to explore, interacting with NPCs, taking on side quests, and looking for the fragments that will unlock more banished lands. Once players find enough fragments, they will then venture into the forgotten locales, where they are tasked with solving each’s unique crisis.
Not without resistance, our heroes will face off against many different types of enemies, such as wild animals, undead beings, dragons, demons, and many more. In battle, characters can use melee weapons, ranged attacks, and even magic to gain the upper hand. With each location rescued, players take one step closer to both restoring the modern world and facing off against the evil behind its potential erasure.
