Dragon Quest Creator Yuji Horii Gives Update on Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate

Dragon Quest 12 is Still In-Development, No Further Details Given

In a tweet posted on May 27, "Dragon Quest Day," Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii expressed his gratitude for the numerous well-wishes and addressed fans' concerns surrounding Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate's development.

"Thank you so much to everyone for the many congratulations!" Horii said in response to Dragon Quest Day greetings. "There has been some worry about Dragon Quest 12, but I was actually in a meeting about it just now. While I can’t go into any details yet, I am hoping everything turns out to be something worthy of the posthumous work of the two [Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama] who passed away. I’ll do my best."

Originally announced in May 2021, Dragon Quest 12 was described as taking a much darker and more adult-themed approach compared to previous entries in the long-running JRPG series. Creator of cultural icon anime/manga series, Dragon Ball, and a long-time contributor to Dragon Quest, Akira Toriyama's iconic character and monster designs have been a cornerstone of the series since its inception. The passing of Akira Toriyama earlier this year cast a dark shadow over the project as the game experienced further delays into development. Additionally, the game's beloved composer, Koichi Sugiyama, passed away in 2021.

According to a Bloomberg report from April 2024, the game has faced multiple internal delays at Square Enix. The specific reasons for these delays remain undisclosed, but it appears that Square Enix is now making significant changes to get the project back on track. Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate is set to be the final mainline series entry featuring the two artists' last pieces of works for Square Enix.

Despite the setbacks, Horii assured fans that the development team is dedicated to creating a game that will be a testament to the geniuses of the legends involved. Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate will focus more on decision-making and feature a revamped combat system of the traditional turn-based gameplay that fans love.

No further announcements on Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate were made during Dragon Quest Day, however, fans have suspected that Square Enix could make further announcements or reveal further information on the game during next month's Tokyo Game Show 2024.
