Borderlands 4’s new biome, Carcadia Burn, was detailed in recent footage. Read on to learn more about how the new area fares in the series’ overall aesthetic and the game being the biggest title in the franchise.
Borderlands 4 is the Biggest Borderlands Game To Date
A Classic Borderlands Biome
Borderlands 4 introduces a new biome that is reminiscent of classic wasteland areas in the series. As the game is inching closer to its release, more footage of the highly anticipated sci-fi looter shooter has arisen.
To cap off their month-long coverage of Gearbox’s upcoming title, Game Informer shared in a video on July 26 more information about one of Borderlands 4’s biomes, the Carcadia Burn. Compared to the lush green starting area of Fade Fields, players are shoved into a desolate wasteland, which is home to The Rippers, led by The Ripper Queen.

Carcadia Burn was the result of the impact caused by Elpis, Pandora’s Moon, crashing into Kairos at the end of Borderlands 3. The exclusive footage featured several activities that players can experience in the area, such as puzzle challenges, fighting against Rippers, mini-boss battles that reward loot, and more. The video also highlighted the new vehicle, the Digi-Runner, which is essential in traversing the dangerous wastelands, as the area is quite big and a horde of Rippers might ambush players who aren’t careful.
Additionally, Dominion, home to the main antagonist of the story, the Timekeeper, was mentioned, being a highly vertical area that is composed of districts that embody the different biomes of Kairos. Not much was elaborated on, as it is a late-game area that might be best experienced by players firsthand.
The Biggest World Gearbox Has Created

Carcadia Burn is expected to be massive, as the game is said to have more interesting and daunting biomes for players to explore. In an interview with Rolling Stone on July 25, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford and Gearbox Global Creative Executive Officer Andrew Reiner shared the team’s vision in creating Borderlands 4.
One of the major aspects they highlighted was the game’s seamlessness, presenting a semi-open world with no loading screens. Pitchford said that with the new technology they have, they were able to load chunks of data at high speeds, thus making a seamless world possible. He stated, "So now, as artists, we don’t have to engineer these spots where we have to make it narrow and get to a choke point, now we can just have the world be wide and open and free."

Meanwhile, Reiner gave an insight into how the story ties in with the world they have created. He explained, "We have an awesome story campaign, but for the first time, we’re allowing you to play through this in a nonlinear fashion. There’s a point in the game where you have [a] choice of going to three different story locations and picking at it the way you want, and you’ll go to new regions that are just massive. This is the biggest world we’ve created."
Pitchford continued and expressed their desire to give players as much freedom as possible. He said, "The thing that I said that Graeme [Timmins, Gearbox Creative Director] came up with was ‘less borders, more lands.’ It became a mantra for us."
Keeping Veterans Happy and Welcoming Newcomers

Although there have been tweaks in its gameplay and adjustments in several aspects of the game, Gearbox promised that Borderlands 4 will still retain the series’ charm that made it beloved since the first game’s debut in 2009. Pitchford said that their goal was to keep classic Borderlands fans happy, but would also open their doors to newcomers by introducing new things to the franchise.
He noted that ⅓ of the player base for Borderlands 3 were new to the series, which became a point of emphasis in their approach for their next title. Pitchford said, "So, we wanted to make sure that we made the game accessible to people that have never played a Borderlands game before, but also make it familiar. If this is your first Borderlands, it’s a perfect entry point."
With Gearbox continuing to improve upon the series’ well-tested weapons systems and promising a very ambitious endgame, fans will be treated to a new Borderlands game that may be the best the series has ever seen. Borderlands 4 is set to be released on September 12, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
