Green expressed that while he cannot say much about the details of the project, they are optimistic and has been meeting regularly with Lawrence and his team to refine their draft. He added, "It's a great big sprawling nightmare world we wanna see real." Michael Green is the writer for Blade Runner 2049, Alien Covenant, and Logan.

Lawrence, of Hunger Games and Constantine fame, mentioned how Bioshock is "one of the best games ever created" and how he finds its ideas and philosophies appealing and intriguing. This combo, in addition to the visual aspects of the game, carries a certain "gravitas" for him. Furthermore, the director expressed his love of the "strange mashup of [the] genre… a period piece, mixed with body horror,... sci-fi. …I think it can be really unique and really beautiful and really entertaining.”

BioShock is a first-person shooter developed and published by 2K. First released in 2007, the game is a narrative- and action- heavy game, critically acclaimed and won many awards due to its incredible writing, twists, atmosphere, and gameplay elements. BioShock is set in 1960 where players take on the role of Jack who discovers the underwater city of Rapture. The city is in shambles partly because of ADAM, a genetic material that grants superhuman powers, which is also one of the game’s central mechanics.
