Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Gets Robust Customization and New Features
Expanded Gender and Relationship Options Make the Game More Inclusive
Nintendo fans finally got a long look at Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream during a dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation in January 2026. This is the first major update on the game since it was originally revealed, and it fills in plenty of details about what players can expect when the life simulation title launches this April 16.
The sequel builds on the same basic premise that defined the 2013 original: players create Miis, place them on an island, and watch as they form friendships, fall in love, argue, dream, and get into unpredictable yet often funny situations. The showcase emphasized that the original’s structure remains intact, but the systems surrounding it are being expanded to feel more inclusive and responsive to how players express themselves.
Perhaps the biggest story from the showcase was Nintendo’s confirmation of expanded gender and relationship options. For the first time in the franchise’s history, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will let players create non-binary Mii characters outside of the traditional Male and Female options, with clothing and customization no longer locked to a specific gender. Players can also define romantic preferences more freely, including options that support same-sex relationships, asexual identities, and aromantic characters.
These come after the 2013 3DS game drew criticism for excluding LGBTQ+ representation. Following public backlash and the "Miiquality" campaign, according to CBS News, Nintendo issued an apology, stating it had "failed to include same-sex relationships" and pledging that any future installment would be designed to be more inclusive and representative of all players.
The company also explained back then that it was too late to modify the original game’s design at the time. With Living the Dream, Nintendo appears to be fulfilling that promise more than a decade later.
Customization overall appears far more robust than before. The Mii creator now supports more detailed facial features, hairstyles, body options, and expressive animations, taking inspiration from tools seen in games like Miitopia. Players can also design the island however they want and assign themes that influence the tone of interactions on their island.
To that end, Miis are now more autonomous. They can build relationships more naturally over time and trigger longer chains of events. Nintendo showed examples of Miis developing rivalries and forming unexpected couples without direct player input.
Image and Mii Sharing Restrictions
Not all announcements were met with enthusiasm, however. Nintendo confirmed that Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will include restrictions on certain image-sharing features. According to the company’s official support statement, these limits are meant to keep the game "fun and safe" for everyone, since some out-of-context screenshots or clips could be misinterpreted online.
Functions for transferring images directly to smartphones, posting images to social media straight from the Switch, and automatic uploads on the Switch 2 will not be available. This follows Nintendo’s reiteration that although there is no dedicated Switch 2 Edition of the sequel, the game is fully playable on the new hardware via backwards compatibility. Fans can still capture images and share them manually, but it will require extra steps.
Moreover, according to translated details from Nintendo’s Japanese promotional materials, Miis and certain items can be shared through local wireless communication, but not through the Internet. Nintendo did not specify the reason why, but many speculate that this may perhaps be to avoid moderation issues or copyright concerns tied to custom character designs.
Whether the expanded changes will be enough to win over both longtime fans and newcomers will only become clear once the game hits players’ Switch consoles this Spring. With a launch day of April 16, players need not wait much longer to see if this new island life is as dreamy as promised.
