Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is slated for a Spring 2026 release, raising expectations that the showcase may provide a more specific release date. The game is confirmed as a Nintendo Switch title, but it will be playable on the Switch 2 because of backwards compatibility. Nintendo has not yet indicated whether the game will receive a Nintendo Switch 2 version with performance upgrades.
Originally announced in March 2025, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is positioned as a revival of the cult-favorite quirky social simulation series centered on managing a community of Mii characters and watching their often unpredictable relationships unfold.
A Long-Awaited Comeback

The series began with Tomodachi Collection, which launched exclusively in Japan for Nintendo DS in 2009 and sold 3.2 million units. The sequel, released in Japan in 2013 as Tomodachi Collection: New Life and later released worldwide in 2014 as Tomodachi Life on Nintendo 3DS, also proved to be a major success. The 3DS entry sold 6.72 million copies globally, making it one of the best-selling games on the platform.
Despite the success, the Tomodachi Life series has not received a new mainline entry in more than a decade. Nintendo has never explained the lengthy gap. In the years since, the franchise has developed a lasting cult following online, with clips and anecdotes from its unscripted Mii interactions continuing to circulate long after release.
