Mortal Kombat 1 Release Date Announced

Official Announcement Trailer Released

Late last week, the Mortal Kombat official Twitter and Youtube accounts posted the Official Announcement Trailer for the new Mortal Kombat game, Mortal Kombat 1. It was initially revealed (rather abruptly) during Warner Bros.'s Earnings Call in February. Then, NetherRealm released a 30-year appreciation video, ending with a teaser for the game. It became official three weeks later with a beautifully-rendered trailer, complete with the game's signature bloody glory, and a release date for September 19.

Mortal Kombat 1 Story

The Beginning of a Universe

In a recent interview with Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, he stated, "it is not a continuation of the Mortal Kombat 11 story." He further explains that "the characters have completely different roles in this new timeline, and we really wanted to punctuate that, really emphasize that with our title. So this is Mortal Kombat 1. It is a brand new beginning."

However, Ed Boon also mentions that "this is Liu Kang's universe," which is what the ending of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath shows when you fight as him in the final battle. This can be interpreted as Mortal Kombat 1 not continuing Mortal Kombat 11 because it is an entirely new storyline but still connected to the latter as a product of its ending. It also explains why Liu Kang is used on the cover instead of the previous usage of Scorpion on Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11, and sharing with Sub-Zero on Mortal Kombat 9.

The game will feature original backstories for their iconic fighters, including Scorpion, Kitana, Mileena, and others.

Mortal Kombat 1 is now available for pre-order on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
