Cyberpunk 2077’s studio, CD Projekt Red, has announced big plans for the franchise’s future including more anime, a live-action adaptation, and a direct sequel to its massively successful game.

CD Projekt hints at plans to collaborate further with animation company Studio Trigger, now known for their work on the successful Cyberpunk Edgerunners. The anime, which streamed on Netflix, contributed to increased sales of Cyberpunk 2077. While it's unclear if more Edgerunners content is in the works, CD Projekt aims to continue working with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, especially given the positive feedback received. However, it's emphasized that Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, and so there are no confirmed plans for a continuation of the same story or a Season 2.

The Live-Action Project with Media Company Anonymous Content

On other hand, CD Projekt is in the early stages of developing a live-action project based on Cyberpunk 2077 along with global media company, Anonymous Content. The media company is a veteran studio that have produced award-winning TV series and movies such as True Detective, Mr. Robot, The Revenant, and Spotlight.

The live-action adaptation will feature a brand-new story set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. Anonymous Content will be working closely with the Cyberpunk 2077 creative team, so gamers can expect a lore-grounded approach to the adaptation.

The Sequel Codenamed Project Orion

CD Projekt is also currently in the conceptual design phase for Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel, codenamed Project Orion. The studio claims that it is being developed by a team of veterans responsible for fine-tuning Cyberpunk 2077 and creating the Phantom Liberty Expansion. Additionally, the project is set to involve studios in North America and Poland, with a substantial development team expected to work on it starting late 2024.

Given the development time of the original game, one can expect the sequel to actually come out in 2077.

The Redemption Arc is Complete

Cyberpunk 2077 had a devastatingly bad launch, with PlayStation even pulling the game from its stores. However, the company kept working on the game for three years, and after the Patch 2.0 and Phantom Liberty DLC came out, Cyberpunk 2077 has now completed its redemption arc, scoring positive reviews with critics and major outlets globally.

During an investor presentation, CD Projekt announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has achieved over 25 million sales since its release in December 2020, surpassing the sales rate of The Witcher 3. Additionally, the Phantom Liberty expansion alone garnered three million sales within its first week of release. CD Projekt appears committed to expanding the franchise into different media, including anime and live-action adaptations.
