Among Us Overview

Among Us is a multiplayer social deduction game developed by the independent studio InnerSloth. Released initially on June 15, 2018, the game didn’t gain widespread popularity until mid-2020, when streamers and social media propelled it to viral status during the COVID-19 pandemic. This unique blend of teamwork, strategy, and deception offers a highly interactive experience, where players work together—or betray each other—in a space-themed setting.

The game pits 4-15 players aboard a spaceship, sky base, or planetary outpost. The crew members must complete tasks to maintain their location while attempting to uncover the Impostors, saboteurs among them whose goal is to eliminate the crew and cause chaos. Gameplay thrives on deduction, misdirection, and player interaction, often leading to intense debates and humorous accusations.

Among Us Gameplay

Image

At its core, Among Us is a social deduction game with simple yet engaging mechanics. It thrives on player interaction, where communication and observation are essential to survival. The gameplay unfolds across various maps, each presenting unique challenges, tasks, and opportunities for sabotage.

Players are assigned roles and scattered across the map. Crewmates focus on completing tasks while Impostors plan their strategy. Players move around, completing tasks or sabotaging systems, while observing others’ behavior. Impostors use vents to move covertly or set up traps.

Tasks are straightforward, they range from dragging and clicking to timing-based challenges. These tasks serve a dual purpose: they give Crewmates a goal and offer opportunities for Impostors to deceive by pretending to work on tasks.

IGN gave it a 9/10 praising the game for its ability to create an experience that focuses on playing against the players themselves rather than the mechanics. Metacritic gave it an 85/100, with critics highlighting its easy-to-understand mechanics and well-paced gameplay. Player reception for Among Us on Steam has been overwhelmingly positive, with players celebrating its blend of fun, silliness, and depth.

Among Us Trivia

⚫︎ The game’s success was so unexpected that InnerSloth canceled plans for a sequel to focus on improving the original. This allowed Among Us to evolve with frequent updates and enhancements based on community feedback, ensuring its lasting appeal.
⚫︎ Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a senator in the U.S., played Among Us with other Twitch streamers in 2020.
⚫︎ Among Us was the most downloaded game in 2020 with over 230 million downloads across all platforms.
⚫︎ The term "Sus," short for "suspicious," was originally used in law enforcement to refer to a person of interest or someone under suspicion. However, it gained widespread popularity and became a part of modern slang thanks to Among Us. In the game, players often accuse others of being sus during discussions and emergency meetings, especially when trying to identify Impostors. The repeated use of the phrase, combined with the game's viral rise in popularity during the pandemic, led to sus becoming synonymous with anything suspicious or untrustworthy.
