Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma Overview

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma (simply known as Guardians of Azuma or RF:GoA) is an upcoming action RPG and life-simulation game developed by Marvelous Inc. and set to release this May 30, 2025. Similar to Rune Factory Frontier and Tides of Destiny, this game is a spin-off in the Rune Factory series, which is itself a spin-off of Marvelous’ Story of Seasons (formerly Harvest Moon) series.

The game takes place in Azuma, an eastern land heavily inspired by Japanese aesthetics and traditions. Players assume the role of an Earth Dancer, tasked with restoring hope and vitality to the land after it has been ravaged by a cataclysmic event known as the Celestial Collapse and the subsequent spread of a corrupting force called the Blight.

Guardians of Azuma retains the series’ core gameplay loop of farming, combat, and social interaction. However, it introduces several new features. Players can now utilize the power of dance and sacred treasures alongside new weapons like bows and talismans to combat the Blight. A key mechanic not present in previous Rune Factory games is the ability to rebuild entire villages, construct buildings, and attract residents who contribute to the village’s growth. The game also emphasizes building relationships with villagers, with options to romance and recruit them to aid in battles.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma Gameplay

In Guardians of Azuma, players assume the role of an Earth Dancer, utilizing the power of dance and sacred treasures to combat the spreading Blight and restore the land. The game introduces new weapon types, including the bow and talisman, which can help deal with enemies from afar. Based on recent trailers, Sacred treasures, such as the umbrella and drum, serve multiple purposes: The umbrella can summon lightning to strike enemies, water crops, and facilitate gliding, while the drum can help revitalize crops.

A big part of the game is rebuilding four different villages, each representing a different season and drawing inspiration from Japanese culture. Players construct and customize buildings to attract villagers, who then contribute to the community. As with previous Rune Factory games, farming is also a central mechanic, with players cultivating crops in each village and taking advantage of seasonal benefits. Aside from monsters that can be recruited, it appears that villagers can also be assigned farming duties to help free up players to pursue other activities.

Like previous Rune Factory titles, Guardians of Azuma offers players the opportunity to build relationships with a diverse cast of characters..Players can choose their protagonist’s gender at the start of the game and engage in interactions that can lead to friendships or romantic partnerships. Following in the footsteps of Rune Factory 5, the game appears to support same-sex relationships, giving players 15 potential partners to pursue.
