Monster Hunter: World Overview

Monster Hunter: World (also known simply as World or Iceborne) is an action RPG developed and published by Capcom, released in 2018 as the fifth main installment in the Monster Hunter series. Building on the franchise’s established reputation for co-op monster hunting, World marked an evolution in the series, with simultaneous releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and later on PC. The game received an expansion in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, which added new content and refined existing mechanics.

World’s release on more powerful hardware enabled seamless map transitions and improved multiplayer systems, allowing multiple players to interact within a single lobby. Iceborne built upon the base game, introducing the Clutch Claw, Master Rank difficulty, along with a plethora of new monsters, areas, and gear.

Set in the New World, an expansive and untamed continent, Monster Hunter: World places players in the role of a hunter working with the Research Commission, where they are investigating the Elder Crossing, a migration of massive creatures to the New World. The Commission believes that it has something to do with the massive elder dragon, Zorah Magdaros. Iceborne shifts the focus to the Hoarfrost Reach, where a new elder dragon, Velkhana, becomes central to the story.

Monster Hunter: World Gameplay

The core gameplay loop of Monster Hunter: World consists of hunting monsters, collecting resources, and crafting gear to take on tougher challenges. Players can choose from 14 different weapon types, each with its own combat style.

Combat occurs in interconnected maps filled with wildlife and environmental hazards. Success in hunts hinges on mastering weapons and managing resources such as healing items and traps. A quest is failed once the timer runs out or the Hunter is knocked out three times. Loot from slain or captured monsters is used to craft and upgrade weapons and armor, with the gear defining the player’s stats and skills.

Moreover, the Iceborne expansion introduced a variety of content, one of which is the Clutch Claw, a grappling tool that allows players to target specific monster weak points. Additionally, the Master Rank difficulty level offers increased challenge and rewards, while layered armor provides cosmetic customization options without affecting gear stats.

Monster Hunter: World Reviews

High Scores All Around

Image

Monster Hunter: World garnered a Metacritic score of 90 for its PS4 and Xbox One versions, while the PC version received an 88. Iceborne shares a similar fate, with its PS4 and Xbox One versions scoring 89 and 90 on Metacritic, respectively, and the PC version receiving a slightly lower score of 87. User reviews on Metacritic hover around 7.8 for World and 8.5 for Iceborne. Common complaints include performance issues and the series' notoriously steep learning curve.

GameSpot awarded the game an 8 out of 10. While they praised the game’s innovative additions to the series and seamless multiplayer integration, they criticized the console version's complex friend-grouping system. Although this issue is absent on PC, GameSpot noted that the PC release didn’t offer significant performance improvements over the console versions despite being on more powerful hardware. GameSpot awarded Monster Hunter World: Iceborne a higher score of 9 out of 10. They praised the expansion’s numerous additions to the base game, but criticized the relatively small number of brand new monsters introduced at launch.

In contrast, IGN awarded the base game an almost perfect score of 9.5 out of 10, praising how the game’s maps feel like a living, breathing ecosystem. However, IGN gave Iceborne a slightly lower score of 9 out of 10, acknowledging its substantial content but criticizing its reliance on Subspecies and Variants over entirely new monsters.
