Dragon Age: The Veilguard Overview

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the fourth mainline entry in the Dragon Age series developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts (EA). It serves as a sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition, and is set a decade following the events that transpire in the continent of Thedas during Inquisition. Set in the rich and storied world of Thedas, players take on the role of a fully-customizable protagonist, known as Rook, on a quest to save the continent from the destruction caused by evil gods.

The Veilguard blends traditional RPG elements with modern action-adventure mechanics. Players can choose from three main combat classes—Warrior, Rogue, and Mage—each with distinct playstyles, abilities, and progressions. Throughout Thedas, players can complete several types of quests that further both the main and side contents of the game.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Reviews

Among the gaming community, Dragon Age: The Veilguard appears to be a polarizing entry in the series. There is sharp discrepancy in how Veilguard is received between player-users and publications. Game8 gave Dragon Age: The Veilguard a rating of 90/100, commending its fast, action-packed gameplay, combat mechanics, and cohesive level design. Additionally, the game is praised for packing in great audiovisual presentation, a compelling narrative, and a wealth of side content to explore and finish.

On Metacritic, Dragon Age: The Veilguard sits at a Generally Favorable critic rating with 71% Positive reviews. Critic reviews indicate that while the game has its faults, Veilguard is, overall, a compelling game, with equally engaging stories and content, to explore and finish. Eurogamer Germany gave the game a rating of 100, deeming Veilguard as an outstanding entry that brings the series to modern day form. Meanwhile, PC Gamer gave Veilguard a 79/100 rating and commended the game for being an effective Action-RPG title, but underwhelms with its storywriting

Most player reviews criticize Veilguard for its perceived departure from the original spirit of the Dragon Age series. In particular, Veilguard's character designs received flak, with critcisms indicating that the designs were rather too cartoonish for a mature game. Others have commented that the game's storytelling felt disjointed, and other gamers have remarked their distate for the game's wider inclusion of gender identities for the player character. On the other hand, positive reviews for the game indicate that its animations are impressive along with the reworked combat system. Many have also expressed their enjoyment of in-game content, particularly the side quests, as well as the unravelling of the Companion's side stories.
