Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Overview

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is an upcoming action game for the Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for release on the 6th of November, 2025. Developed by Koei Tecmo in collaboration with Nintendo, this title serves both as a sequel to Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and a prequel to both the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The game takes place in the distant past of Hyrule, during the Imprisoning War that ultimately led to the events of Tears of the Kingdom. Building upon the hack-and-slash mechanics characteristic of the Hyrule Warriors series, players will be able to control key characters, such as Zelda and King Rauru, each with their own unique abilities and playstyles, as they confront hordes of monsters and strive to thwart Ganondorf’s plans.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Gameplay

The original Hyrule Warriors combined elements from Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series with KOEI TECMO’s Dynasty Warriors, and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is expected to follow this same format. The game will allow players to control characters such as Princess Zelda and King Rauru to engage in large-scale battles against numerous enemies.

In its predecessor, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, players executed combinations of regular and strong attacks, utilized character abilities, and employed Sheikah Runes, such as Remote Bombs, Stasis Cryonis, and Magnesis—mechanics seen in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Drawing from this, Age of Imprisonment may incorporate combat mechanics seen in Tears of the Kingdom, especially since it is a prequel of that game.
