Citizen Sleeper 2 Overview

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is a role-playing game developed by Jump Over the Age and published by Fellow Traveller, released on January 31, 2025. As a sequel to the acclaimed 2022 game Citizen Sleeper, it features the return of several characters from the original.

In the Starward Belt, a collection of habitats located within an asteroid belt, the player becomes a Sleeper: an emulated human consciousness inhabiting a corporate-owned artificial body. Pursued by the corporation that created them and a ruthless gang, players must commandeer a ship, gather a crew, and accept contracts to survive and carve out a new existence.

The game builds upon the mechanics of its predecessor, where players roll dice each cycle to determine actions and outcomes. However, it introduces new elements such as managing the ship’s maintenance and upgrading it to access new locations. Players will need to manage their resources during contract-based missions and deal with the consequences of their choices. The game also introduces a Stress mechanic, which can negatively impact the player’s dice. Additionally, each character class possesses a Push ability that gives them an advantage during jobs, but these usually come at a cost.

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector Gameplay

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is a narrative-driven role-playing game with tabletop-inspired mechanics. Much like the first game, each in-game cycle begins with rolling a set of six-sided dice, which players allocate to perform actions, with higher rolls generally leading to better outcomes.

A notable addition to the sequel is the Push mechanic, which allows players to exert extra effort for potentially greater rewards at the cost of increased Stress. Accumulated Stress can impair the Sleeper’s performance and other detrimental effects. The game also introduces character classes, each with unique skills and limitations.

Exploration is expanded beyond a single space station to multiple hubs within the Starward Belt. Here, players can take contracts that serve as episodic missions, with each one presenting their own challenges. Player choices in these missions significantly influence the storyline, with branching narratives and skill checks that reflect the character’s development and decisions.

High Scores All Around

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector holds a respectable 86 on Metacritic, but its critical reception is more nuanced, ranging from perfect scores to more middling assessments. Many outlets lauded the game, with Game8 awarding a 90/100, praising its rich world-building and gameplay, while acknowledging that its minimalist audio-visual presentation might not appeal to everyone. Eurogamer and VG247 were even more enthusiastic, awarding perfect 5-star scores and highlighting the game’s writing and characters. They did express disappointment, however, at the lack of planned follow-ups.

Not all reviews were uniformly positive. Inverse gave the game a 7/10, appreciating the exciting moments created by contracts and dice rolls, but calling the game’s story unfocused. Digital Trends echoed this sentiment with a 3.5/5, citing a deep learning curve and under-explained systems, while still acknowledging the game’s table-top inspired mechanics, a strength carried over from the first Citizen Sleeper.

User reviews on Metacritic, while generally favorable at 7.9, reveal a wider range of opinions. Many players praised the story and the Stress mechanic. However, a vocal minority gave the game 0/10, primarily citing its perceived "political" content as a major detractor.
