Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector Review Overview
What is Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector?
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is a role playing game developed by Jump Over the Age and published by Fellow Traveller, scheduled for release on January 31, 2025. As a sequel to the acclaimed 2022 game Citizen Sleeper, it features the return of several characters from the original.
In the Starward Belt, a collection of habitats located within an asteroid belt, the player becomes a Sleeper: an emulated human consciousness inhabiting a corporate-owned artificial body. Pursued by the corporation that created them and a ruthless gang, players must commandeer a ship, gather a crew, and accept contracts to survive and carve out a new existence.
The game builds upon the mechanics of its predecessor, where players roll dice each cycle to determine actions and outcomes. However, it introduces new elements such as managing the ship’s maintenance and upgrading it to access new locations. Players will need to manage their resources during contract-based missions and deal with the consequences of their choices. The game also introduces a Stress mechanic, which can negatively impact the player’s dice. Additionally, each character class possesses a Push ability that gives them an advantage during jobs, but these usually come at a cost.
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector features:
⚫︎ Larger in Scope than the First Game
⚫︎ Expanded Dice and Skill System
⚫︎ Branching Narrative and Choices
⚫︎ Survival Hinges on Resource Management

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector Overall Score - 90/100
It’s remarkable that Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector was primarily created by just three developers, with Gareth Damien Martin at the helm. Despite its indie roots, the game outshines many AAA titles. The narrative and world-building are strong, but what makes the game truly special is how its themes are integrated into the gameplay itself. Every decision you make feels important, the consequences of those choices stick with you, and its mechanics reflect the anxieties of living in a system that commodifies individuals. It becomes a deeply personal experience that constantly makes you consider, and sometimes overthink, your actions. Admittedly, the heavy reliance on text may deter some players, and the minimalist presentation occasionally dulls the impact of its more harrowing moments. Yet, beneath its understated surface lies a novel (pun intended) experience—one that digs into your skin and demands introspection.
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector Story - 10/10
Citizen Sleeper 2 lives and breathes through its story. It’s a dystopian tale of human minds commodified and copied into artificial bodies, tackling themes of identity, exploitation, and sheer survival with an uncompromising edge. As a Sleeper—an escaped android fleeing corporate control—your journey is both intimate and universal. The narrative captures the human condition in a way that few games do. Moral complexity and genuine emotion are woven into every interaction, and the world-building is nothing short of masterful, echoing the best of speculative fiction while carving out its own voice. It’s a narrative that challenges, haunts, and ultimately stays with you long after the dim glow of your screen fades away.
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector Gameplay - 9/10
The gameplay mimics its world’s desperation. Dice rolls determine your actions, with outcomes that range from success to failure and everything in between. The Stress mechanic adds a constant undercurrent of urgency, a sense that things could spiral out of control at any moment. As failures mount and crises emerge, you’re forced to make tough calls. While the reliance on dice and text might not be everyone’s idea of a good time, it does evoke the feeling of living paycheck to paycheck in space—one bad roll away from utter disaster.
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector Visuals - 8/10
Minimalist but effective, the UI and visuals of Citizen Sleeper 2 are reflections of its design philosophy. The character portraits, by Guillaume Singelin, are particularly striking, imbued with a real sense of individuality. But while this simplicity allows the narrative to breathe, there are times when you can't help but wish for a little more visual dynamism. During those critical moments, the lack of varied expressions and more effective visuals can leave things feeling a tad flat.
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector Audio - 8/10
The audio design leans heavily on atmosphere, with ambient music and sound effects that perfectly capture the cold emptiness of space. However, the lack of voice acting and dynamic soundtracks during intense moments can make certain scenes feel less impactful. The quiet works beautifully in reflective moments but misses the mark in high-octane sequences, where a richer soundscape could have added to the immersion.
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector Value for Money - 10/10
There are indie gems that leave you wondering how they’re priced so modestly compared to AAA titles that charge more but deliver far less, and Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is one of those rare finds. At just $25, this game offers an experience brimming with depth and replayability. Its narrative weaves themes of survival and identity into every decision you make. The gameplay mirrors this depth with branching contracts that can resolve in multiple ways and character classes that fundamentally alter how you approach skill checks. Every choice feels like it matters, and the game’s systems reward those who dive back in for another run to see how differently things can unfold.
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector Review | A Cyberpunk Disco Elysium
There are games you play, and then there are games that burrow under your skin, taking up residence in your thoughts long after the screen goes dark. Disco Elysium was one of those games for me. It resonated on a level that felt almost spiritual, a visceral connection that’s rare to find. Leaving Revachol left a void, a quiet ache for something—anything—that could recapture that je ne sais quoi. It was the kind of experience that had me, quite honestly, bawling my eyes out for how achingly human it felt.
The recommendations came pouring in not long after: Baldur’s Gate 3, Planescape: Torment. Masterpieces in their own right, undoubtedly, and yet… they didn’t quite click the same way Disco Elysium did. So, when Citizen Sleeper 2 arrived, I approached it with a healthy dose of skepticism. I’d heard the whispers, the comparisons to Disco Elysium, the well-meaning assurances that this was the one. I’d danced this dance before, the cautious optimism giving way to the blow of a game that came close but never quite bridged the gap. I braced myself for another near miss.
But then… It happened. Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector did something I hadn’t expected. It reignited that spark, that connection dormant since my time in Revachol, and yet it did so in a way entirely its own. It has that particular kind of allure that keeps you up long past any reasonable bedtime, consequences be damned. That’s been my reality these past few nights: laptop glowing faintly in the dark, caught in the thrall of Citizen Sleeper 2. The sensible thing, of course, would have been to close the game and get some sleep. Instead, I hit "end cycle" and plunged headfirst into another in-game day, lost in the hustle and bustle of its space stations, completely oblivious to the real world outside my window.
Finding Humanity in a System Designed to Crush it
But what is a Sleeper? Well, in the far future, technology has allowed human minds to be copied into artificial bodies. This technology is exploited by corporations who offer debt-ridden individuals a drastic solution: become a Sleeper. They are put in cryogenic sleep, their mind is copied into an artificial body, and that body works off their debt for the corporation. Once the debt is cleared, the mind is erased, and the artificial body is repurposed—leaving them, theoretically, debt-free upon awakening. It’s an efficient system, at least from the corporation’s perspective.
And that’s where you come in. You are a Sleeper, caught in the gears of an interplanetary capitalist society, one that presents itself as functional but is rotten to the core. You’ve recently escaped corporate ownership, but now you’re on the run with a malfunctioning body, enemies on your trail, and a gaping hole where your memories should be. All you have upon waking up is a friend, Serafin, and the same desperate need shared by everyone in this universe in ruins: to survive.
Right off the bat, Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector presents a world that feels uncomfortably familiar. It’s the far future, sure, but its neoliberal undercurrents echo all the dysfunctions of our present-day world. Systems that claim to work for the common good are, in truth, patchwork creations that barely hold together—rigged to serve the privileged few who think the human cost of progress is measured in broken bodies. It’s this biting resemblance to reality that gives the game’s story its teeth. What does it mean to be human in a society that commodifies existence? How do you resist when you’re nothing more than a product in the eyes of those in power?
Yet, despite it all, the game’s heart lies in the people you meet and the connections you form in space stations and in contracts. These contracts humanize the characters around you, including you as the android Sleeper. You’re not navigating the emptiness of space alone—your crew and the people you encounter enrich the story in ways that feel deeply personal. Each one has their own battles, their own stories to tell. Whether they’re striving to do good, fighting for their own survival, or simply trying to help you along the way, their struggles are real and human.
Stress is the Only Constant in the Vacuum of Space
And these themes bleed directly into the gameplay itself. At its core, the gameplay revolves around dice rolls and skill checks, with only three possible outcomes: Positive, Negative, and Neutral. One dice roll is equivalent to one action, and each action you take—be it hacking through a ship or even simply resting to recover—is rated Safe, Risky, or Dangerous. The more dangerous the action, the greater the rewards, but also the more severe the consequences if things go wrong. It’s a constant gamble, a microcosm of the precarious choices everyone in this world has to make just to survive.
Adding to the tension is the ever-present Stress mechanic. And let me tell you, it’s aptly named. Stress is everywhere. It seeps into every aspect of the game—you, your contracts, your crew, and even your dice carry their own Stress levels. Push your luck too far, and you’ll trigger a Crisis—a high-stakes scenario tied to a special location in a contract with its own dice actions and ticking clock. Failing to resolve the Crisis doesn’t stop you from completing your objectives, but it ramps up the contract’s Stress by one each cycle.
What makes Citizen Sleeper 2 truly brilliant is how it turns the simple act of rolling dice into something far more profound. Over time, they cease being mere numbers on a screen and start feeling like a vital resource. Fail a roll, and the impact is gut-wrenching. Your Energy depletes, Stress levels rise, your dice start to break down, and with each failure, it feels as if the world is pushing back harder. The game makes failure sting in a way that few others do. Excessive Stress leads to malfunctions that can further jeopardize your rolls, and at the highest difficulty, this system can feel almost cruel. The stakes are high, and you can’t afford to waste any chance you get.
It’s this relentless pressure, this feeling that the game is consistently trying to knock you down, that makes it so strangely addictive. You’re always fighting an uphill battle, but every small victory feels earned. And unlike games like Baldur’s Gate 3 or Disco Elysium, you can’t simply reload a save to undo a bad roll. The game autosaves after every action, and it forces you to live with the consequences of your choices.
There are ways to tip the scales in your favor, albeit at a cost. The Push abiliy gives you an advantage. You can reroll your dice, boost them, or even give your crew a leg up—depending on the character class you choose at the beginning of the game. That is, if you're willing to bear the weight of additional Stress.
Less is More… Sometimes
I’ll admit, Disco Elysium might have ruined me for other text-heavy games. The original had partial voice acting, but The Final Cut went all in, and it was transformative. Coming to Citizen Sleeper 2, with its complete absence of voice work—just the occasional ambient sound that often fades into the emptiness of space—is a stark contrast. Personally, I find it… manageable. There’s a certain kind of pleasure in letting well-written prose paint its own pictures in my mind. But I can absolutely see how some players might balk at the prospect of navigating walls of text with nothing but silence or ambience as their companion. Those quiet stretches can be isolating, but they also contribute to the game’s atmosphere perfectly: subtle, moody, and always present.
The problem, though, is that this approach doesn’t always work. While the quiet works wonders for establishing atmosphere during calmer moments, it falls a bit flat during more intense scenes. The absence of a dynamic soundtrack during these moments feels like a missed opportunity. What should be pulse-pounding sequences are instead reduced to brief red and white flashes on the screen, leaving it up to the players to fill in the blanks.
It’s a clever approach, sure, and it leans into the game’s tabletop RPG (TTRPG) influences. In a TTRPG, the Game Master describes the action, and the players visualize it; a few dice rolls and some narration paint the scene, with many left to the players' imaginations. Citizen Sleeper 2, however, often feels like it asks a bit too much of the player, expecting them to bridge a gap that could have been more effectively handled with stronger audio-visual cues. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it does hold the game back from reaching its full potential.
Now, don’t get me wrong—I’m all for clean, functional aesthetics, and Citizen Sleeper 2 executes that very well in its presentation. Its visual and audio design speaks to the game’s ethos: less is often more. I deeply appreciate the art direction, particularly the character portraits created by French comic book artist Guillaume Singelin. While the game doesn't explicitly spell things out, minor details in the artwork bring the characters to life in ways that words alone cannot. Even so, the game could benefit from adding a bit more to its presentation.
Take Serafin, for example. This character gets an alternate portrait when the narrative calls for it, which helps convey his physical state. Yet, not all characters are afforded this same depth. There’s a moment early in the game when a character chases you, driven by anger. The urgency of the situation should have been reflected in their portrait. Instead, the character’s expression remained calm and collected, a stark disconnect between the emotion conveyed in the text and the image on screen.
I understand that the game’s simplicity is by design. Gareth Damien Martin, the man behind Jump Over the Age, values the complexity that arises from what is omitted. And, in many ways, that’s true in Citizen Sleeper 2. However, I can’t help but feel that the game could have pushed its medium further. Video games are an art form in their own right, and they offer so much more than just text and ambient sounds.
Then again, this simplicity could very well have stemmed from the fact that it was made by a few people. Regardless, the design choices are effective, but there are moments where adding a bit more—whether in visuals or audio—could enhance the experience without compromising its core simplicity.
Is Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector Worth It?
Yes, Do Not Sleep on This Game
At $24.99, Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector makes you really think about what you’re getting for your money these days. It makes me question the value proposition of a lot of AAA games. Why shell out almost three times the price when you can get a game like this—one that offers genuinely deep world-building and thought-provoking themes. Sure, seeing walls of text might be a bit intimidating at first, but trust me, the narrative and the weight of your decisions make it all the more worth it.
The branching storylines, varied contracts, and diverse crew members you can recruit make each playthrough feel fresh. Add to that the different Sleeper classes, and the game practically begs you to experiment with new paths and strategies in future runs.
Honestly, few games manage to feel this personal, and fewer still linger in your mind long after you’ve put them down. Yet, Citizen Sleeper 2 does just that, and I’m already itching to spend another hundred cycles with Serafin and the Rig.
