Cyberpunk 2077 Overview

Cyberpunk 2077 was released on December 10, 2020, and is an open-world action RPG developed and published by CD PROJEKT RED. The game is based on the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG series by Mike Pondsmith but is not a direct sequel or prequel to any prior entry. Instead, it builds upon the lore and themes of the source material to deliver a standalone narrative.

Set in the dystopian metropolis of Night City, a corporate-controlled city in the Free State of California, players take on the role of V, a customizable mercenary. V's life takes a turn when they become entangled with a powerful biochip containing the digital consciousness of Johnny Silverhand, a rebellious rocker portrayed by Keanu Reeves. With only six months before Johnny's consciousness overtakes their own, V must navigate Night City's social inequality and cyberware-filled streets to rid themselves of the biochip and, at the same time, fulfill Johnny's ultimate goal: take revenge against the oppressive corporation, Arasaka.

Despite facing initial criticism for technical issues upon its release, the game has experienced a remarkable transformation through post-launch updates. These updates have not only stabilized the game but also introduced new features and storylines, propelling it to one of the greatest comebacks in gaming history, according to critics and users. As a result of this success, an unnamed sequel, codenamed "Project Orion," was announced in October 2022.

Cyberpunk 2077 Gameplay

Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person action RPG that puts players in the role of V, a customizable mercenary. Players have the freedom to shape V's appearance, backstory, and skills to their liking with cyberware implants that influence their capabilities in and out of combat. The core gameplay allows for multiple ways to approach objectives, including non-lethal solutions. A tiered equipment system and branching skill trees further enable players to tailor gameplay to their preferences.

Aside from the gameplay, player choices significantly impact the story. The game offers multiple endings, and the dialogue options and in-game decisions players make can dramatically affect the narrative and mission outcomes. In some cases, the outcome of one mission can even alter how other missions in Night City play out.

The open-world setting of Night City is divided into six regions, with the Badlands just outside it. Here, players can explore the city on foot or in vehicles, interact with various NPCs, and engage in a wide range of activities outside of the main quest, which include gigs and actual arcade mini-games.

Cyberpunk 2077 Reviews

A Rough Start with a Strong Finish

Cyberpunk 2077’s highly anticipated launch in 2020 was met with significant disappointment. Despite immense hype and early "Game of the Year" predictions, the game was plagued by numerous bugs, performance issues, and technical glitches, especially on older consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One.

Reviews were mixed, with many outlets, like The Guardian—which gave the game a 3 out of 5—highlighting the game’s ambitious setting and world-building, but also criticizing its technical shortcomings. GameSpot is one of these, awarding the game a 7 out of 10 and noting that while there was plenty to do, many activities lacked substance. The game’s Metacritic scores reflected these mixed reviews, with the Xbox One version earning a 61 and the PS4 version a 57. However, CD PROJEKT RED remained committed to improving the game through numerous updates and patches.

The release of the Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023 marked a turning point for Cyberpunk 2077. Critics praised the expansion for finally delivering on the game’s original promise. Game8 awarded the expansion an 88 out of 100, highlighting CD PROJEKT RED’s dedication to delivering a more polished version of the game. GameSpot, in a complete reversal of its original review, gave the expansion a perfect 10 out of 10, praising the detailed and complex setting of Dogtown. IGN also gave the expansion a near-perfect 9 out of 10, stating that it finally lived up to the hype all those years ago.

User reviews of the game on Metacritic have also improved over time, with many now giving it an average rating of 8 out of 10. Many note that while some technical issues may still persist, the game has undoubtedly come a long way since its troubled launch.
