REPLACED Gameplay
REPLACED is a 2.5D action platformer that has you explore through the various levels centered around Phoenix-City. Players can run, climb, and interact with the environment to access locations in the foreground and background that are normally inaccessible.
Exploring areas can reveal hidden upgrades, like additional health. Moreover, players can also uncover journal log entries to piece together the events that led to this world’s state.
Certain levels have stealth sections, with the player taking cover and moving out of enemy sight. One of these sections has R.E.A.C.H. sneaking past enemy snipers, hiding behind makeshift covers of wrecked cars, garbage bins, and ticket booths.
The game features an action system inspired by the 2D beat-em-up genre and the critically acclaimed combat mechanics of 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight. As R.E.A.C.H., players can dodge and counter incoming attacks, assisted by a symbol that will momentarily appear atop an enemy. Dodgeable attacks have a red symbol, while counterable attacks have a yellow symbol.
Besides engaging in hand-to-hand combat, R.E.A.C.H. also has access to a gun that can seamlessly transform into a club-shaped melee weapon. A gun meter on the bottom left fills up when landing melee attacks, though it will reduce over time if the player stays inactive. Once filled up, the meter can be emptied to execute a gunshot or destroy armored enemies’ shields.
REPLACED Story Plot
Set in the backdrop of an alternate 1980s USA that was once embroiled in a nuclear catastrophe, an AI, R.E.A.C.H., finds itself trapped in a human body against its will. Now entering the underbelly of Phoenix-City, it searches for the purpose behind its creation by the Phoenix Corporation.
Along the way, R.E.A.C.H. must expose the corporation’s hidden agenda and survive in a dystopic city teeming with outlaws and an unfair system that disregards human life.
