Everything We Know About Monster Hunter Stories

Monster Hunter Stories Story Plot

Image

The story is set in a small village called Hakum, where you and your childhood friends Lilia and Cheval venture into the forest to find monster eggs. Inspired by the ceremony in which Riders use a Kinship Stone to forge deep bonds with monsters, you pretend to perform a rite of kinship. To your surprise, one of the eggs hatches into a Rathalos.

The villagers are astonished by your success, but their amazement is short-lived as a disease called the Black Blight descends upon the village, causing widespread devastation.

A year later, you and your friends part ways to pursue your own missions as you become a Rider. With the help of your feline partner Navirou, you face various trials and gain experience, exploring a world filled with both joys and challenges.

Unlike Hunters, who hunt monsters, Riders form friendships with them. One of your key missions is to uncover the truth behind the Black Blight and embark on an adventure to understand the true meaning of kinship.

Monster Hunter Stories Gameplay

Image

Monster Hunter Stories is an RPG where, instead of hunting monsters as in most MH games, you raise and battle with them, similar to Pokémon. As a Rider, you explore the world on the backs of fan-favorite monsters, striving to become a true Rider.

You can choose to play as a male or female character, befriending monsters by stealing their eggs from nests and hatching them. These companions, known as “Monsties,” can be nurtured, trained, and ridden, joining you in battles across various locations. You can also customize your Monsties.

Unlike the action-based combat of other MH games, Monster Hunter Stories features turn-based combat with a rock-paper-scissors mechanic. There are three attack types: Power, Speed, and Technical. Power beats Technical, Technical beats Speed, and Speed beats Power.

When an enemy targets a character and that character attacks, a Head-to-Head occurs, pitting the attack types against each other. If you and your Monstie use the same attack type with the advantage, you'll unleash a Double Attack, preventing the enemy from retaliating.

Instead of the vast array of weapons found in other MH games, you can choose from four: the Great Sword, Sword and Shield, Hammer, and Hunting Horn.

Winning battles rewards you with experience points and item drops. Additionally, there are numerous subquests to help you gain more monsters and items.
