Invincible VS
Release Date Gameplay & Story Pre-Order & DLC Review

Invincible VS is a 3v3 tag-fighting game by Quarter Up and Skybound Games, based on Image Comics' Invincible universe. Read on to learn how it plays, what it's about, and everything else we know so far.

Invincible VS Gameplay

From what was revealed in the game's official trailer, Invincible VS will be a 3v3 tag-team fighting game featuring staple mechanics to the genre like combo moves, tag-team attacks, and special attacks, as well as what seems to be a fatality mechanic.

3v3 Battles

Invincible VS centers around 3v3 tag team battles, where you will need to select three different fighters from the roster to play as. Each character specializes in two fighting styles that differ in attack range or tactics.

A few of these include ranged attackers, who do better striking at a distance, strikers, who prefer fighting in close quarters, and balanced attackers, who are more versatile. Other specializations include rushdown, zoning, mixup, and mobility.

Each of these archetypes serves to help players create their own well-rounded team and strategize how to tackle battles with them.

Combos, Special Attacks, and Supers

There are three basic attacks: light, medium, and heavy. Combos can be strung together to deal damage to your opponents. On top of that, players can also add a special attack to their combos to deal serious damage.

Special attacks vary depending on the directional button held. There are over three different special attacks: neutral, forward, and down. Moreover, each of these attacks can be "boosted" to raise their damage. To achieve this, players must have at least one full gauge, which is directly below their HP, and then hold the ‘boost’ button.

If the gauge on the bottom of the screen is full, players can unleash their character’s "Super", which are attacks that deal serious damage.

There are two Supers: forward and backward. To perform any of the Supers, players must either move forward or backward and then hit the Heavy and Special attack buttons.

Assists, Tags, and Assist Breakers

While battles are fought one at a time in Invincible VS, players can call upon the two other teammates to assist them. By tapping either of the two assist buttons, the corresponding teammate will briefly appear and perform an attack against the opponent.

Holding either of the buttons, on the other hand, will swap the current character with that teammate. Players will then play as the new teammate until they choose to "tag" on a different one. Assists and swaps can also be integrated during combos, letting them rush in with an attack immediately when called.

Teammates can also be called while holding the ‘boost’ button to interrupt an opponent’s combo. This is very helpful to players who are in a pinch, but it is very risky as it will cost two boost gauges, longer assist timeouts, and the teammate’s HP.

Invincible VS Story

Invincible VS is set in an alternate universe independent from the main continuity set by the comics and the TV series, confirmed narrative director Mike Rogers. He further explained that the game’s story mode will narrate the events via cinematics interspersed and woven across its gameplay sections.

Invincible VS Setting

Invincible VS Omni Man standing opposed to a battered Mark Grayson to the right

Invincible VS takes place sometime during the confrontation between Mark Grayson and his father, Omni Man, in the comics and TV series. Battles in the game will take place in the fictional versions of Chicago, Mount Everest, the Moon, and more.

The timeline of Invincible VS remains unclear, with certain key events potentially shifted to accommodate characters who appeared much later in the original comic series and its TV adaptation.

Invincible VS Plot

Invincible VS will likely be a retelling of the Destruction of Chicago, in which Omni Man reveals his mission to Mark and attempts to recruit him in the Viltrum Empire’s conquest of Earth. Mark refuses his father’s invitation and vows to throw him off the planet, along with the help of other heroes.

In VS, Omni Man is accompanied by other Viltrumites and dons the Empire’s suit for his battle against his son. This implies that he contacted his allies or had briefly returned to the Empire before their confrontation.

Invincible VS Characters

Invincible

Invincible, born Mark Grayson, is a half-human and Viltrumite who followed the footsteps of his father to become a hero. Gifted with flight and super-strength, he’d soon realize that his Viltrumite heritage is a curse as an invasion heralded by his own father would soon commence.

Omni Man

Invincible VS Omni Man standing with a stern look and a composed posture, Manhattan buildings at the back

Omni Man is Earth’s mightiest protector and its greatest threat. Initially posing as a benevolent hero from space, he inserted himself into human culture as ‘Nolan Grayson’ and began a family with his wife Debbie for years. He’d later reveal that his arrival on Earth was a mission given by the Viltrum Empire to conquer it, one that he hoped his son would be a part of.

Anissa

Invincible VS Anissa standing with a stern look and crossed arms, Lucan and Thula can be seen in the back, set in a broken laboratory

Anissa is an agent of the Viltrum Empire and assists in the invasion of Earth in Invincible VS. In the main continuity, she would arrive long after the battle between Omni Man and Invincible. She attempted to recruit the latter to the Viltrum Empire before facing him in one of the many battles that they would have throughout the series.

Atom Eve

Invincible VS Atom Eve with bloodied hands and mid-battle pose, her expression furious, Himalayan mountains can be faintly seen in the background

Atom Eve, born Samantha Eve Wilkins, is a super-powered human with the power to manipulate matter and energy. This gives her a vast range of powers, such as flight, constructs, energy blasts, regeneration, and resurrection. She would encounter a rookie Invincible during her career as a member of the Teen Team, where she forms a deep bond with him.

Battle Beast

Invincible VS Battle Beast mid-speech, right hand clutched to the hilt of his weapon

Battle Beast, born as Thokk on the planet Dornn, is a highly skilled combatant, blessed with superstrength, heightened senses, and a proficiency in both hand-to-hand and swordsmanship. He is defined by an insatiable thirst for battle, often battling foes regardless of their loyalties. As a result, he has become both adversary and ally to Invincible and his companions.

Bulletproof

Invincible VS Bulletproof mid-flight and battle pose, bloodied hands, feet, and knees, and a black background

Born as Zandale Randolph, Bulletproof is an enhanced human with the powers of flight and near-invulnerability. He later joined as a member of the new Guardians of the Globe.

Rex Splode

Rex Splode, or Rex Sloan, was sold by his own parents to be trained and experimented with by the government to become a superpowered assassin. He gains the power to explode anything he touches and becomes a hero with a few stints as a member of both the Teen Team and the Guardians of the Globe.

Cecil Stedman

Invincible VS Cecil Stedman, irritated, tired look, standing with an open left hand, Manhattan buildings and blue sky in the background

Cecil Stedman is the head of the GDA (Global Defense Agency), which monitors Earth to protect it from threats, potential or otherwise. Given his cold and pragmatic approach, he isn’t every hero’s favorite boss.

Monster Girl

Monster Girl is a 26-year-old woman named Amanda who, due to a side effect of her power to turn into a giant green monster, is stuck in a 12-year-old girl’s body. Despite this, she continues her work as a superhero and fights alongside other members of the new Guardians of the Globe.

Robot

Invincible VS Robot standing and pointing forward as if to direct an attack, black background

Rudolph "Rudy" Connors is a super genius piloting a mechanical body, which he uses to work as a superhero under the name "Robot". He has outfitted himself with various technologically advanced armaments and will use both his firepower and tactical mind to outsmart his opponents.

Ella Mental

Ella Mental is a brand-new original character made for Invincible VS. Having inherited an ancient totem from her family’s fortune, she received the power to control the four elements and set out on a journey to become a superhero.

Thula

Invincible VS Thula bloodied and pointing her blade-braid forward in a battle stance, Manhattan building burning

Thula of the Viltrum Empire is a ruthless warrior and is known to favor using a blade tucked inside her braid. Having honed her skill in the art of combat, she skillfully and precisely moves her blade-braid like a whip.

Lucan

Invincible VS Lucan mid-flight and battle pose, hands bloodied and stern expression, dimly lit laboratory

Lucan is a loyal soldier of the Viltrum Empire and is as arrogant as he is ruthless. He believes in the inherent superiority of his Viltrumite genes and considers impure hybrids sired by their species’ interbreeding as a detestable half measure.

Powerplex

Powerplex, also known as Scott Duvall, is an adversary of Invincible. After losing his sister and niece in the Destruction of Chicago, he pins the blame on Omni Man as well as his son, Invincible. Using his power to absorb kinetic energy and convert it into electricity, he delivers powerful damage while also being gifted with enhanced durability.
