Xbox Goes to Where, When, and How Players Want
Xbox has reaffirmed that it intends to bring more of its games to competitor platforms such as the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation as the company continues to "extend its content to new platforms," according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
In his annual letter to shareholders, Nadella wrote, "We are bringing great games to more people on more devices. With our acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, which closed October 2023, we’ve added hundreds of millions of players to our ecosystem," adding that with Xbox cloud gaming, the company will push forward to "innovate to offer players more ways to experience the games they love—where, when, and how they want."
Earlier in the year, Xbox brought four fan-favorite titles to the Switch and PlayStation for the first time, which included Pentiment and Grounded—both by Obsidian Entertainment, Hi-Fi RUSH from Tango Gameworks, and Sea of Thieves by Rare.
With the company's recent moves in the sphere of its gaming competitors, Nadella remarked that "this is a consequential time for our company, our industry, and the world." He added, "Ultimately, our mission requires that we translate technology into empowerment for everyone, into real-world impact. At the end of the day, that’s what really matters."
In addition, Nadella also mentioned that Xbox has generated over a billion USD in lifetime revenue from its various IPs. "We now have 20 franchises that have generated over $1 billion in lifetime revenue," he remarked, "from Candy Crush, Diablo, and Halo, to Warcraft, Elder Scrolls, and Gears of War."
"Whether it’s Nintendo Switch and PlayStation players surviving in the backyard together in Grounded, or PlayStation players getting to live a pirate’s life in Sea of Thieves, with cross-play, these multiplayer titles available will bring more people together and continue to grow their communities of players," Xbox Game Studios president Matt Booty said previously.
