New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support
The upcoming Switch 2 added new features for its joy-con, which seemingly included mouse support. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released a publication on February 6, 2025 regarding a patent made by Nintendo on the joy-con for Switch 2.
The publication included information on the functionalities of the new controller for Switch 2, particularly highlighting its mouse-like capabilities. The idea for the joy-con having mouse features came after the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which briefly showed the controller being dragged across a flat surface, suggesting that it can be used as a mouse.
The patent all but confirmed the speculations for the new joy-con as Nintendo has been tight-lipped about anything related to the Switch 2.
Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers
The joy-con for the Switch 2 looks to function similarly to the Nintendo Switch’s controller, having both joy-cons detachable from the main body of the hand-held console. The new feature that the patent highlighted was Switch 2’s joy-con functioning as a mouse.
Based on the publication, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."
The joy-cons can also be charged using a new charging dock where up to two joy-cons can be charged at the same time. A new attachment is also included that connects the joy-con and the console magnetically, which has a wrist strap at the end similar to the joy-con for the Nintendo Switch.
Additionally, a new pair of controllers was also introduced in the patent, which looked like a standard controller split in half, each with an optical sensor on the side and can also be used to function like a mouse. Furthermore, there would also be a separate attachment that can combine these controllers to make them into a standard controller.
All of the features mentioned in the publication for the patent may not be indicative of the final product for the Switch 2, especially since Nintendo has not made any official announcements regarding the functions of its joy-con, or any other attachment or device related to the Switch 2.
Nintendo Direct For Switch 2
Nintendo of America announced on Twitter (X) on February 5, 2025 the official schedule for the upcoming Nintendo Direct which will focus on details related to Switch 2. It will air on April 2, 2025 at 6 AM PT and 9 AM ET on all official Nintendo social media platforms.
