Legendary video game creator and designer Shigeru Miyamoto took to Twitter (X) today with a special message for fans, confirming the release date of the upcoming Super Mario movie sequel. The sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie was just confirmed to premiere in Japan on April 24, 2026. This update followed the initial announcement made during this year’s MAR10 Day celebrations, where it was revealed that the movie would debut in the US on April 3, 2026. His full tweet read:
"Hello, this is Miyamoto. We will be broadcasting a Nintendo Direct tonight, but before that I would like to make an announcement. The release date for the new Super Mario animated movie in Japan has been set for April 24, 2026. We are working with the Illumination team to make it a fun movie, so please continue to look forward to it."
Illumination's Chris Meledandri previously revealed that the original team behind the first Super Mario Bros. Movie would be returning for the sequel. The upcoming movie is expected to feature a bright and fun story that will broaden Mario’s world further. In addition to the Mario movie sequel, Miyamoto and Nintendo have other exciting projects in the pipeline. They are currently working on a live-action Zelda movie. Furthermore, Illumination reportedly pitched an Avengers-style Super Smash Bros. Movie to Nintendo late last year.
