EA Discontinues Development on Star Wars FPS Amid Restructuring
Will Focus on Existing Titles
As EA shifts away from development on licensed games, the company announced it is halting development on an unnamed Star Wars FPS being developed by Apex Legends-makers Respawn. The project, initially confirmed by EA in January 2022, was axed as part of the company's plans to refocus its gaming portfolio and prioritize owned IPs.
Following the announcement of EA's layoffs and company restructuring, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele stated that the company will be committed to its flagship franchises. "It's always hard to walk away from a project, and this decision is not a reflection of the team’s talent, tenacity, or passion they have for the game," Miele wrote in a statement yesterday. "Giving fans the next installments of the iconic franchises they want is the definition of blockbuster storytelling and the right place to focus."
While specific official details about the canceled Star Wars FPS remain scarce, reports suggest that the game would feature a Mandalorian bounty hunter protagonist. In addition to the canceled Star Wars FPS, EA previously confirmed that Respawn is developing a sequel to the critically acclaimed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, along with another unnamed Star Wars project.
