Players Dive Into Borderlands’ Surprise Mobile Release

Borderlands, the hit looter-shooter from Gearbox Studios, now has a mobile version available to play on iOS devices. The news quickly spread across social media and Borderlands-focused forums after the game was shadow-dropped on the Apple App Store. There was no trailer or teaser before its quiet release, catching fans off guard.
The game is currently in limited-time testing, exclusive to users in the United States, and is only available through Apple’s App Store for now. According to a report by IGN, a Zynga spokesperson said that original creator Gearbox has provided "creative guidance on the franchise’s design, history, and lore, " suggesting that this is more of a spin-off rather than a full-fledged sequel to the mainline entries.

Borderlands’ mobile gameplay is out in the wild, with content creators sifting through the game’s first few hours and discovering what makes this game different. In the game’s official description on the App Store, it’s dubbed as an "Epic Looter Shooter, " where players loot weapons and take down enemies in traditional Borderlands fashion.
The free-to-play mobile version is developed by Zynga, known for creating bite-sized mobile hits like FarmVille 3 and CSR Racing 2. As with most mobile games in the market, it also incorporates typical mobile game trappings such as microtransactions and battle passes.
Buttery Smooth Performance

Reception for Borderlands Mobile has been largely positive at the time of writing. One of the biggest surprises is how smoothly it runs on devices with iOS 18.0 or higher. On the Borderlands subreddit, fans have been sharing their early experiences after just a few hours of play.
Some say that despite the limitations of mobile controls, the first-person shooter gameplay remains very playable. Others are calling it "fun," even comparing it to other major mobile releases like NetEase’s Destiny: Rising and Ubisoft’s The Division: Resurgence.

As of now, players are still discovering more of what the game has to offer, including mission modes like Tower of Terror, Circle of Slaughter, and Raid Bosses, which reward better loot. A co-op mode is also available, though fans have yet to figure out exactly how it works.
In the meantime, everyone in the U.S. can try the game out for themselves. Borderlands Mobile is currently accessible on the App Store, with an initial download size of 2.9GB.
