Pokémon Champions launches with performance issues and a limited gameplay format. Check out what fans think of the streamlined competitive title and their concerns with the game.
Pokémon Champions Launches With Several Issues
No Classic 6v6 Battles and Performance Woes

Pokémon Champions debuted to a mixed fan reception, with many criticizing its technical performance and restricted battle formats. The new title, which aims to streamline the franchise’s competitive play, has faced significant online backlash regarding its unpolished state at launch.
Players criticized the lack of 6v6 battles. Although Pokémon Champions seeks to modernize the competitive scene through the "bring 6, pick 4" official Video Game Championship (VGC) format, much of the player base remains loyal to the traditional 6v6 Singles experience that has defined the series for decades.
While Pokémon Champions aims to provide a unified platform for competitive play, its live-service format introduces several caveats that shift the overall atmosphere of the scene. We at Game8 went hands-on with the title at launch, and you can find our first impressions right here.

Beyond the restricted battle formats, fans have voiced concerns regarding the game's technical performance, specifically its 30 FPS cap and "clunky" menu navigation. Many are frustrated by what they perceive as a severe lack of optimization, arguing that Pokémon Champions is not demanding enough to justify such poor performance on the Nintendo Switch 2.
These frustrations were further amplified on launch day when Pokémon World Champion Wolfe Glick shared a clip on X (Twitter) documenting a significant bug he encountered while attempting to use the game’s matchmaking system that prevented him from battling against other trainers.
Despite creating a new save file and switching user profiles, Wolfe found the issue persisted, effectively soft-locking his progress. Other players reported similar experiences, though some noted a potential workaround: Switching to a different Wi-Fi source reportedly resolved the issue for a handful of users.
Low Pokemon Roster Count and Missing Battle Items

Aside from the gameplay and performance issues, the launch roster of Pokémon Champions has left many fans underwhelmed. The game debuted with only 186 usable Pokémon, a figure that represents less than 20% of the total National Pokédex.
This limited selection is largely due to the developer's decision to exclude all non-evolved forms at launch, focusing strictly on final evolutions for competitive balance. However, in an interview with Hypebeast on March 25, Pokémon Champions Producer Masaaki Hoshino hinted at the possibility of earlier evolutions coming to the game.
"At launch, only final evolutions will be available. This is another topic that Morimoto-san and I debated at length. After we introduce a lot of the final evolutions, we might consider earlier evolutions as well. For now, this approach is more accessible for new players," he said.

Adding to player concerns is the absence of essential battle items fundamental to competitive play. We have compiled the game's current held item list, revealing that several staples, including the Life Orb, Choice Specs, Choice Band, and Rocky Helmet, are all missing at launch.
Several veteran and casual players have described the initial state of Pokémon Champions as "barebones" due to its aforementioned issues. While many are frustrated by the lack of content, some fans argue that these restrictions have created a uniquely interesting "reset" for the meta as the title finds its footing.

Despite its rocky start, Pokémon Champions has significant room for growth through planned seasonal updates and its upcoming mobile release. Furthermore, Hoshino urged fans to share their feedback, as this will help them continue to improve the game over time.
Pokémon Champions is now available on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, with its iOS and Android versions coming later this year. To stay up-to-date with the latest information about the game, check out our article below.
