On January 11, 2025, some people on Reddit, Resetera, and other online forums reported that Amazon was canceling their Metroid Prime 4 pre-orders.

According to some screenshots posted by online users, Amazon reached out to them and canceled their pre-order "due to a lack of availability." Despite the sad news, Amazon assured them it would refund the reservation change within 1-2 business days.

Some Metroid fans are disappointed with the news, as their pre-order goes way back when Metroid Prime 4 was initially announced at E3 2017. Despite the cancellation, it does not mean that the game is scrapped; rather, it is not available for pre-order on Amazon.

Metroid Prime 4’s Development History

Metroid Prime 4 was first announced during E3 2017, with the director of product marketing of Nintendo America stating that it would not involve Retro Studios, the developer of past Metroid titles. At that time, Nintendo did not disclose what developer was working on Metroid’s latest installment.

Two years after the official announcement, Nintendo announced that it restarted the development under Retro Studios. In a YouTube video from Nintendo on January 25, 2019, senior managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi stated that "the current development progress has not reached the standards we seek in a sequel to the Metroid Prime series."

In June 2024, Nintendo released a full gameplay trailer of Metroid Prime 4 at the end of its Nintendo Direct, moving its release date to 2025. Nintendo also released its full name, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. The gameplay trailer also revealed the game’s antagonist, Sylux, leading a group of Space Pirates in an unnamed facility.

More recently, Nintendo reaffirmed Metroid Prime 4: Beyond’s 2025 release window in its news post on January 3, 2025. Though Amazon's pre-order cancellation might cause worries among Metroid fans, the post indicates that the game is still releasing this year.

With the Switch 2’s official announcement just around the corner, only time will tell whether the game will be released on the original Switch or its successor.
