Silksong Skips Gamescom ONL, Confirms Geoff Keighley
Disappointment swept through the Hollow Knight community yesterday when Gamescom producer Geoff Keighley confirmed on Twitter(X) that Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel in the Hollow Knight series, would not be making an appearance at the event’s Opening Night Live (ONL).
Hope had flared among fans after Keighley revealed the initial lineup for the show, teasing additional unannounced titles with a "+ More" to the list. This sparked speculation that a long-awaited update on Silksong, after being radio silent for more than a year, might finally arrive.
However, these hopes were dashed when Keighley later took to Twitter(X) to definitively rule out Silksong’s presence. "Just to get this out of the way, no Silksong on Tuesday at ONL," the producer said. He did assure fans that Team Cherry is still hard at work on the game.
Despite the disappointment over the lack of Silksong news, Keighley did offer something to look forward to with a lineup that includes titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Monster Hunter Wilds, Civilization 7, MARVEL Rivals, and more! Check out the article below for a list of confirmed games for Gamescom 2024’s ONL and more details on the event.
Fans Turn to Memes Amidst Long Development
The wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong might stretch into its sixth year. Initially announced in 2019, news of Silksong’s release seemed to gain momentum in June 2022 when it appeared during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase. Xbox’s Twitter(X) account even confirmed later that day that the game will be launching within "the next 12 months."
However, hope had turned to disappointment when Team Cherry’s Mathew Griffin announced a delay in May 2023, citing the need for additional development time to refine the game. Despite the delay, fans clung to hope, fueled by breadcrumbs: the appearance of the game’s Xbox store page in April 1st of this year, and its rating by the Korean Game Rating and Administration in February. Many speculated that these developments signaled an imminent release, and Gamescom 2024 was seen as a potential platform for a much-needed update.
However, as confirmed yesterday, that wouldn’t be the case. The lack of Silksong news has become such a recurring theme that it’s practically a meme among fans at this point, with them having grown accustomed to hearing about the absence of information rather than the game itself.
While some fans cling to the hope that Keighley’s tweet was a strategic move to surprise everyone with a shadow drop during the event, others have become more cynical. The community has even started creating humorous fake posts, dubbed "silkposts", to satirize the ongoing drought of Silksong updates.
Unfortunately, the absence of Silksong from Gamescom has once again extended the agonizing wait for its release, and the future of the game remains uncertain. It is currently understood that it is still in active development, with a release date yet to be announced. However, news from a few months ago in May have indicated that the game has undergone a launch delay, which was initially set for early 2023.
