FF7 Rebirth Final Trailer Breakdown

Square Enix Shares So Much FF7 Spoilers

Square Enix started off its standalone State of Play yesterday with Final Fantasy Rebirth’s Final Trailer. The trailer itself had little-to-no gameplay but was chock-full of story beats and footage that are near spoiler territory near the endgame.

We’ll be breaking down and highlighting the most significant footage, so be warned of spoilers ahead!

FF7 Rebirth Adapts Everything From the Original, and More

The trailer immediately starts in the Temple of the Ancients, with the Turks’ Tseng holding what looks to be the keystone to open the temple. The temple is the supposed route to enter the City of the Ancients, where the Promised Land resides. Cloud and the gang arrive and are confronted by the Turks’ Reno and Rude and they engage in battle.

Fast forward a little, a very unique silhouette that Final Fantasy fans will immediately recognize can be seen. It’s no other than the interdimensional swordsman, Gilgamesh, who has appeared in numerous Final Fantasy titles to cause mischief and collect famous swords. Gilgamesh has never appeared in FF7 before, so this will most definitely be a welcome addition, seeing as he has been a fan favorite since his introduction in FF5.

Afterwards, a scene of an enraged Cloud stabbing Sephiroth with the Buster Sword is seen. The environment clues us in that this is the Nibelheim flashback, wherein Cloud recalls the events of Sephiroth’s rampage and massacre of the town. Sephiroth, after getting stabbed with a gigantic sword, hugs Cloud tightly and whispers in his ears, "Good Cloud, very good. Fill your hollow heart with rage."

The trailer then cuts to Zack fair caressing a seemingly-unconscious-and-hopefully-still-alive Aerith, telling her "I’m back now Aerith, I’m back." This is likely the alternate timeline wherein Zack lived and found his way back to Midgar, only to find most of AVALANCHE, including Barrett and Tifa, have died. Aerith’s fate in this timeline is still unknown.

Another very welcome surprise that wasn’t in the original is the inclusion of Cissnei! Cissnei was a character introduced in FF7’s prequel, Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core. She was a fan favorite that has not been seen since, so fans will be thrilled to finally have her back in action for Rebirth. She was previously a member of the Turks alongside Tseng, Reno, and Rude. However, her fate has been unknown all this time, as she didn’t even appear in FF7’s sequel movie Advent Children. What her role will be in Rebirth will be up to us to find out come February 29, 2024.

A short and emotional scene starring Dyne, Barrett’s former accomplice and friend, exasperated at the atrocities he’s committed. "With all of this goddamn blood on my hands… How could I ever hold my daughter ever again?" This likely is leading to the confrontation between Dyne and the party in Corel Prison.

A quick scene was shown of Cloud suspecting Tifa of being JENOVA under a guise and seemingly attacking her. This could very well be the time after Cloud gets affected by Mako poisoning, slowly losing control of his mind, consciousness, and memory. This scene leads to one of the biggest bombshells of FF7, right behind an iconic death.

Lastly, the trailer ends with Aerith handing Cloud the White Materia "Holy," while Sephiroth seemingly has taken command of the Black Materia "Meteor," and assumes his One-Winged Angel form.

This is the most spoiler-y scene in the entire trailer, as the – SPOILER WARNING, BE WARNED – the scene of Aerith with unbraided hair in the church slums handing over the Materia is after her death through Sephiroth’s impalement. Sephiroth assuming his One-Winged Angel form, however, isn’t supposed to be this early, as it happens during the finale showdown in the North Crater where he summons Meteor. Could Rebirth potentially reach as far as the original’s Disc 2’s ending, or perhaps this was another change from the original? The latter is most likely.

FF7 Rebirth Costumes and Outfits

FF7 Rebirth will feature alternate beach outfits for the crew! This will most likely be obtained from venturing to Costa del Sol. Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa all get new costumes, while Barrett receives his most recognizable Sailor’s outfit! There’s also a scene where Red XIII accidentally drops his facade and reveals his real voice from being flustered seeing Tifa and Aerith. A quick reminder that Red XIII is still mentally a teenager in his species, even though he’s physically 48 years old.

FF7 Synergy Attacks

In addition to the previously revealed Synergy or team-up attacks, the trailer shows off three new ones! Cloud and Yuffie ruthlessly assault foes with a combination of melee offense and Ninja techniques; Barrett gives Aerith a pair of his glasses to blind and assault enemies with a barrage of their bullets and magic; and lastly, Aerith levitates Red XIII and uses him as a fiery weapon to bludgeon and light enemies aflame.

FF7 Rebirth Minigames

Similar to the previous REMAKE, FF7 Rebirth will have plenty of minigames added and improved upon from the original FF7! The trailer showed off a Dolphin Riding minigame, a card game, the Shinra Parade March minigame, and a rail-shooting minigame featuring Barrett.
