Square Enix celebrates Dragon Quest Day with a new teaser for the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake, quite a surprise after going quiet the past three years.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Teased After Three-Year Hiatus

Game Logo and Platforms Teased

Initially announced in May 2021 as part of a broader reveal that included several new Dragon Quest titles, the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake remained largely under wraps since then. Naturally, the prolonged radio silence had left many in the gaming community wondering about the game's development status.

Today, a new teaser video, posted on Dragon Quest's Twitter (X) , showed the emblem from the Dragon Quest 3 logo accompanied by the words "the legacy begins." The tweet also read "The legend of Erdrick draws near." This led to speculation that the remake might extend beyond Dragon Quest 3 to encompass the Erdrick's, recurring legendary Dragon Quest hero, trilogy, which includes the first three Dragon Quest games. However, there have been no confirmations whether the remake is going in that direction.

The teaser also confirmed that Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake will be available on multiple platforms, including PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Square Enix recently disclosed its strategy of a multiplatform approach for its games, moving away from console exclusivity often seen done with titles like Final Fantasy.

Announced alongside Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, details on both titles have been kept largely under wraps. Dragon Quest 3’s HD-2D remake adopts the visually striking style popularized by other Square Enix titles such as Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy. This art style combines traditional 2D character sprites with high-definition, 3D environments.

The original Dragon Quest 3, released in 1988 for the Famicom and NES, is considered an influential title in the JRPG genre. Over the years, it has been re-released on various platforms, including the Game Boy Color, mobile phones, and the Wii. However, these versions have become less accessible over time, making the HD-2D remake a highly anticipated release for both long-time fans and new players.
