CDPR Narrative Director Says Cyberpunk 2077 Was "Just a Warm Up" for Orion

Development for Orion Now Underway

In a recent Twitter(X) post, Igor Sarzynski, narrative director at CD Projekt Red (CDPR), expressed excitement about the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, code-named Project Orion. His tweet read, "First day in the Boston office! So good to meet old friends and officially kickstart our Orion journey. I couldn't be more excited for this project, and I'm sure we can make it something special. 2077 was just a warm-up 🔥."

CDPR revealed last year that its Boston and Vancouver-based studios are spearheading the development of Orion. The game is expected to include components of its predecessor and continue to build on the framework established by Cyberpunk 2077. No release date has been confirmed for Orion, but speculations point to a 2028 release at the earliest.

Orion Theorized to be Set in Chicago

As things get on a roll, speculations on Orion's setting emerged from Reddit. Fan theories claimed that in-game posters may hint at the sequel potentially taking place in Chicago in 2080.

Others claimed that Cyberpunk 2077's in-game lore points to Chicago. One user posited, "If you listen closely to some of the news broadcasts within the game, some cities part of the NUSA have been mentioned; Atlanta, Miami and New York. But one city that has gotten more attention in night city news and data shards is Chicago and that is largely because of the ‘Transcontinental Maglev Network’ that aims to link Chicago and Night city via a 3 hour train ride."

They further added: "If you choose the Phantom Liberty ending in which V wakes up 2-3 years later — you will notice when you check the current news that the Maglev network is completed and residents are now able to travel between Night City and Chicago."

Cyberpunk 2077 launched the expansion "Phantom Liberty" last September, introducing a new area called Dogtown, additional characters, and a new ending. The expansion launched along with the game's 2.0 update that brought substantial changes, including a revamped skill tree, a new police system, and vehicle-on-vehicle combat.
