Capcom is holding the Capcom Games Competition, the very first game development tournament from the company, in a bid to strengthen the game industry through an industrial-academic collaboration. Read on to find out more about the event!

The First Capcom Games Competition

Strengthening The Video Game Industry

Capcom just announced that the company will be holding the Capcom Games Competition, the first ever of its kind. It is a game development competition for students in Japan utilizing Capcom’s proprietary RE ENGINE, with the goal of invigorating the video game industry by "contributing to the development of research at educational institutions." With this industrial-academic collaboration, Capcom hopes to strengthen the industry overall, contributing to the development of research as well as training potential outstanding talent within the competition.

In the contest, students will make teams of up to 20 people, and each individual will be assigned roles according to game creator job types. The team members will then work together toward creating a game in six months, with support from professional Capcom developers, thus learning "cutting-edge game development processes" as well. Additionally, Capcom plans to offer the winners of the tournament "game production support with the opportunity for commercialization."

The application period will start on December 9, 2024, and is planned to end on January 17, 2025 unless otherwise announced. Those eligible to enter the competition are those at least 18 years of age and are currently enrolled in a university, graduate school, or vocational school in Japan.

RE ENGINE, also known as Reach for the Moon Engine, is Capcom’s own personal game development engine developed in 2014 that was originally designed for 2017’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Since then, it has also been used in several Capcom titles such as other recent Resident Evil games, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, and next year’s upcoming release, Monster Hunter Wilds. With that said, the engine is also continuously being evolved and upgraded to develop even more high-quality games.
