Following major layoffs and the cancellation of a new survival IP, Blizzard Entertainment, the home of iconic titles like WoW, Diablo, and Overwatch is gearing up for its next big game with a recent wave of job postings for the unannounced project.
Blizzard is Hiring New Directors for Unannounced Game
Unconfirmed Whether It's a New IP or Addition to Existing Franchise
Blizzard has posted listings for positions tied to an "Unannounced Game," including key roles such as mission design director, narrative director, and combat AI design director. Though specifics of Blizzard's project remain under wraps, descriptions for these roles hint at a game featuring extensive combat, locations that "weave excellent storytelling," and "multiplayer mission-based gameplay."
Blizzard has a track record of being risk-averse, and while the company hasn't come out with a new IP in recent memory since Overwatch, it is unclear whether the unannounced game will be an entirely new IP or an expansion to one of their existing franchises. In addition to the job listings for the unannounced game, Blizzard's career page also featured positions tied to WoW and Diablo 4, along with roles intended to work across multiple games.
Blizzard's previous plans for a brand-new survival game, known as Project Odyssey, were shelved following a wave of major layoffs across Xbox, Zenimax, and Blizzard. It was reported that over a hundred people were working on the project. Head of Microsoft Studios Matt Booty said that the company, moving forward, is "shifting some of the people working on it to one of several promising new projects Blizzard has in the early stages of development."
According to WoW VP and Exec. Producer Holly Longdale in a recent interview with VGC, Microsoft has "let Blizzard be Blizzard," allowing Blizzard the to pursue its vision despite the recent changes.
