Black Myth: Zhong Kui will be prioritized first before continuing Wukong’s journey. Read on to learn more about how the developers approached this sequel, and if there will be a DLC for Wukong.
Black Myth Series Moving Forward
Starting From Scratch With Zhong Kui

Black Myth: Zhong Kui was recently announced during the Opening Night Live of Gamescom 2025, and will tell a brand new story in the Black Myth series. Fans expected developer Game Science to continue Sun Wukong’s tale through a sequel or DLC, but the dev team wanted to "start from scratch" and create something new.
In a Weibo post on August 25, Game Science CEO Feng Ji explained their thought process on Zhong Kui and how it came to be. Ever since the release of Wukong, Feng Ji was confused and in a daze of sorts. Despite seeing his work of over 20 years come to fruition, happiness eluded him, and he was left with emptiness.
Feng Ji stated, (via machine translation) "No matter how ashamed I felt for not being able to feel happy, these emotions continued to overwhelm me, especially when I was consumed by questions like, ‘Will there be a DLC? Who will be involved? When will it be released?’"

This pushed him and the developers to conceptualize the DLC for Wukong, until Game Science co-founder Yang Qi approached him and asked if he preferred to work on something new instead. Feng Ji was "relieved and delighted" about this and was on the same page with Yang Qi. They eventually convinced everyone, which led to the birth of Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
Feng Ji admitted that working on a DLC for Wukong would have worked too, but they wanted to start from scratch. He elaborated, "A DLC is certainly a viable option, but at this moment, we wanted to create a new Black Myth title first—new heroes, new gameplay, new visuals, new technology, and a new story. We want to free our hands, experiment boldly, break from fixed formulas, and start from scratch."
Will Wukong’s Story Continue?

Although Feng Ji mentioned in the FAQs section of Zhong Kui’s official website that Wukong’s "westward journey won’t end here," it is unclear whether there will actually be a DLC to Wukong or a direct sequel. He even acknowledged the ideas of fans that are far more unconventional and outlandish compared to their initial concepts.
"Like all of you, I deeply love the world of demons, gods, and Buddhas in Journey to the West, so the legend of Sun Wukong will return in the future in a more complete and solid form, once it is fully prepared," Feng Ji said.

Regardless of the uncertainty about how Wukong’s tale will continue, fans will be treated to a new journey that continues to explore Chinese mythology and folklore. Even though the developers noted that the game is still in early development, many are hoping it will not take as long as Wukong did.
