Black Myth: Wukong Sequel 'Zhong Kui' Closes Out Gamescom 2025 ONL

Image

Black Myth: Zhong Kui was unveiled during the last minute of Gamescom’s Opening Night Live 2025 as Game Science’s sequel in the series. Read on to find out more about the follow-up to Black Myth: Wukong.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui is the Series’ Next Entry

Revealed at the Last Minute

As Gamescom’s Opening Night Live (ONL) drew to a close, the event surprised the audience with the announcement of Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the follow-up to Black Myth: Wukong.

Black Myth: Wukong released to critical and commercial success, selling more than 10 million copies within 3 days. According to VGInsights, the game currently has a gross revenue of $978 million across 20 million units sold.

With the success of the first Black Myth title, developers Game Science specifically chose to base their next entry around the mythical figure Zhong Kui, with the promise that it will offer a distinct and fresh game experience, as opposed to making a direct sequel to Black Myth: Wukong.

Zhong Kui the Ghost-Catching God

ONL host Geoff Keighley described Zhong Kui as "the ghost-catching god who wanders between Hell and Earth". The story of Zhong Kui began in the 8th century when Emperor Xuanzong fell ill and was saved from a demon by "a dark and ugly man", according to the National Museum of Asian Art. This man, calling himself Zhong Kui, claimed to be the spirit of a wronged ancient scholar who was compelled by loyalty to protect the throne.

The emperor woke from his dream and, having been miraculously cured of the illness, summoned a court painter to make a portrait of Zhong Kui and distributed it throughout the empire as a talisman to ward off evil spirits. The hero of myth would sometimes be portrayed in these paintings as patrolling on a donkey, accompanied by "a retinue of subjugated demons" who carried his items.

Progress on the Game

While Zhong Kui’s lead role had been concretized, Game Science admitted in an FAQ section in their official website that the next Black Myth entry is still in the early phase, "with the project being little more than an empty folder at this stage". No game footage or story details could be shared at this point in time.

As for why they chose to announce Black Myth: Zhong Kui, Game Science cited their tradition of reporting their progress every 20th of August. Black Myth: Wukong was revealed on August 20, 2020, and released for the PlayStation 5 and PC on August 20, 2024. The Xbox Series X|S version of the game was released today along with the announcement of Black Myth: Zhong Kui on August 20, 2025.

"The dev team, on the other hand, is absolutely fired up–itching to tell new stories well and add new fun to the game, all the while making sure Wukong players feel right at home–and catching them off guard in the best way (sweating-grin intensifies)," concluded the developer.

The single-player ARPG will be released on PC and "all mainstream console platforms". More information on the console releases and release date will be given in the future. To stay posted on the latest information on the game, check out our article below!
