Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) finally launched its long-awaited final patch to close off the RPG’s historic run. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios released BG3’s Patch 8, which marks the final major update for the game. Due to the finality of the update, BG3 saw an uptick in its player count, placing just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games, where before, it had sat at around 60,000 concurrent players. It has since then jumped to over 169,000 as of writing.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke took to Twitter (X) on April 22 the sudden rise of players after the release of Patch 8. He pointed out that with their thriving mod support, it gives them room to focus on their "next big thing." It was previously reported that Larian Studios will be leaving the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe behind, and has plans to create something entirely new.
Due to this, D&D owner Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios, and are currently in talks with other potential partners as to which studio could work on a potential Baldur’s Gate 4.
12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!
The final patch has long been in the works when it was first announced in November 2024 among one of their Steam blog posts. The update includes 12 new subclasses, photo mode, cross-play, and more. The developers posted on BG3’s website a full breakdown of the path’s contents Compared to their previous post in November 2024, this set of patch notes contains a longer list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring that this final update rounds out BG3 as much as they wish.
Larian Studios spared no expense in improving BG3, which is evident in the plethora of fixes and updates they implemented for the final version of the game. They clarify that even though this will be their last major patch, Larian still promises to continue to support the modding community.
