Annapurna Looks to Strengthen Indie and AAA Portfolios
Annapurna, the company behind Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, What Remains of Edith Finch, Outer Wilds, Stray, and more, will see its president Nathan Gary stepping down from his role and departing from the company. As reported by news outlet The Hollywood Reporter several days ago, co-heads of the company's indie gaming division—Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella—will also follow suit.
Former executive producer Hector Sanchez has rejoined Annapurna as its new president. "What's old is new again, as I start a new position as President, Interactive + New Media at Annapurna," Sanchez posted on LinkedIn. "Excited to continue the journey and help to empower storytellers in the development of their visions."
Sanchez will reportedly oversee Annapurna's indie gaming department as the company looks to venture into the AAA gaming scene. Among the other changes taking place at Annapurna, its in-house gaming operations will be integrated with the company's other media divisions—film, TV, and theater.
Alan Wake and Control Franchises Announced for Media Adaptations
In related developments, Annapurna and Remedy Entertainment have announced their partnership to bring big game franchises to the big screen. Last week, the two companies revealed they will endeavor to produce film and TV adaptations of the "Control" and "Alan Wake" games. Additionally, Remedy's upcoming action adventure shooter Control 2 will also receive an adaptation, though details remain under wraps.
"This deal with Remedy isn’t just about adapting great games — it’s about breaking new ground in how companies can collaborate," incoming-president Sanchez said in a statement. "By backing Remedy’s move toward self-publishing, we’re putting our faith in their vision." Meanwhile, Annapurna founder Megan Ellison remarked on the company's optimism in undertaking the joint project. "Today people fall in love with characters and universes, not formats, and we’re excited to leverage Remedy’s beloved, immersive narratives in these new mediums," Ellison said in her statement.
