A24 and Kojima Productions Working on Death Stranding Live-Action Film Adaptation
Death Stranding Film Adaptation Will Have a Fresh Take on Game's Established Universe
The announcement came just a few days ahead of Kojima Productions' eighth anniversary on December 16. With over five million copies sold and a reputation as one of the standout video games of the 21st century, Death Stranding is set to be transformed into a live-action feature film.
The film promises to delve into the intricate mysteries surrounding the apocalyptic event known as the "Death Stranding," where the boundaries between life and death blur, giving rise to nightmarish creatures in a world on the brink of collapse. The collaboration marks a significant venture into the realm of video game adaptations for A24.
According to the joint announcement released by both companies, the film will deliver a fresh perspective on the game's established universe and will explore its narrative in a different way. Video game legend Hideo Kojima said "There are a lot of 'game adaptation films' out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game."
Kojima stated that their goal is to appeal not only to fans of the game but also to a broader audience who loves cinema. "We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born."
Hideo Kojima Will Not Be Directing Death Stranding Movie
Kojima has been a big fan of A24 since its inception, citing that “their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other.” He praised the studio’s films and mentioned that his own works have taken inspiration from them. "Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years. Now, we are making a Death Stranding movie together."
Death Stranding originally released in November 2019 on the PS4, boasting an A-list cast featuring Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro, and Margaret Qualley. Although Kojima directed the video game, he has since clarified that he will not be directing the film. Instead, Kojima will be "deeply involved in producing, supervising, plotting, look, design and content of the film adaptation.".
The feature film adaptation has been in the works for some time. It was first announced in 2022 with Hammerstone Studios, the company behind horror hit "Barbarian," breaking news of co-producing the film. Hollywood news site Deadline reported that Hammerstone Studios will remain on board as co-financier and executive producer.
