TGS 2023 Keynote Focuses on PC Gaming Growth in Japan
The Future of PC Gaming in Japan
Valve is highly optimistic about the future of PC gaming in Japan, according to keynote speaker Erik Peterson. In the past five years, Japan has emerged as one of Steam's fastest-growing major markets, with millions of Japanese players on the platform and counting.
They explained that there has been a major shift in Japanese PC gaming trends, with a fifth of Steam’s Top 20 games originating from Japan. In that vein, Valve is now collaborating with Japanese developers to support their growth in Japan and worldwide. They are also encouraging foreign developers to localize their games in Japanese and release them on Steam for the Japanese market.
Steam Deck to Bridge the Gap Between PC and Console
Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais explains further that continuing forward with the Steam Deck in Japan is the right move to make, as it combines the rising popularity of PC Gaming with a console’s ease of use. To that end, the Steam Deck’s retail availability will be their number one focus moving forward.
Japanese Gaming Market To Grow On Cross-Platform Trend
On the topic of how they plan to grow the Japanese gaming market, Capcom’s William Yagi-Bacon explained the notion of encouraging a cross-platform trend, citing Street Fighter 6's success as an example. He detailed how both console and PC markets were growing at an alarming rate and that continuing the cross-platform trend was one way to continue this growth.
