Hyper Light Breaker Overview
Hyper Light Breaker is a 3D sequel to Heart Machine's popular 2D hack and slash game Hyper Light Drifter. It was initially announced in 2022 and released in Early Access on January 14, 2025. It is an action RPG with roguelite elements where up to three players can explore, loot, and fight in the great expanses of the Overgrowth; an eternally-changing world under the rule of the Abyss King and his Three Crowns.
As of October 2025, developer Heart Machine has announced that development efforts for Hyper Light Breaker will soon come to an end. Hyper Light Breaker will remain in early access while they slowly begin to pull out of production. Players will still be able to experience Hyper Light Breaker and the developers will continue to fix the performance issues that were reported, but they will no longer roll out major updates for the rest of 2025. Players can anticipate one final update in January 2026.
Hyper Light Breaker Gameplay
Hyper Light Breaker introduces the first fully 3D installment in the series, offering dynamic third-person combat with roguelite elements. Players explore the Overgrowth, a procedurally generated open world filled with shifting layouts, enemies, and rewards, providing significant replayability. The core gameplay involves gathering equipment, confronting the Abyss King’s subordinates (known as the Three Crowns), defeating the Abyss King, and utilizing earned rewards for permanent upgrades. The game also includes a cooperative campaign mode, allowing up to three players to experience the adventure together.
Unlike traditional roguelites, death in Hyper Light Breaker does not immediately reset progress. Instead, players return to the hub to resupply, with a full reset occurring only after four deaths. The game features two primary weapon classes—Blades (encompassing melee options like hammers) and Rails (firearms)—with flexible class systems that accommodate various playstyles. Procedurally dropped upgrades, called Holobytes, offer temporary stat enhancements, though their randomness makes specific builds difficult to achieve. Whether played solo or with a team, Hyper Light Breaker promises a challenging and adaptable experience.
