Digimon Story: Time Stranger Overview

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is an RPG published by Bandai Namco Entertainment and developed by Media.Vision, the developers of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (2015) and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory (2017). Released on October 3, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and later on July 10, 2026 for the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, it will be the seventh installment in the Digimon Story series.

Time Stranger follows a male or female protagonist (Dan Yuki or Kanan Yuki), an agent of the secret organization ADAMAS, which investigates anomalous phenomena. After encountering a mysterious Digimon in Shinjuku, they are caught in an explosion and wake up eight years in the past. They are now tasked with uncovering the mystery behind the impending collapse of the world while exploring the interplay between the past and future, the human and digital worlds, and the relationships between humans and Digimon.

Players can assemble a diverse roster of Digimon and nurture them into powerful allies for turn-based battles. They can collect, train, and customize these creatures, with deeper customization options providing "limitless ways to approach the challenges of battle." Digimon can evolve into stronger forms as they grow in experience and meet specific criteria, such as achieving certain stat thresholds. The bond players share with their Digimon also plays a crucial role in their evolution and overall strength.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger Gameplay

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a monster-taming RPG. Players traverse both the human and the Digital World, specifically the Iliad server, and encounter hostile Digimon in diverse environments, including hubs where Digimon live ordinary lives. Much like previous games in the series, wild Digimon encountered in the field have a "scan rate": defeating or encountering them repeatedly increases this percentage, and at 100%, you can recruit them; recruiting at 200% grants stat and level-cap bonuses.

During combat, players bring three Digimon into active battle, with a fourth slot reserved for a guest party member, plus three more in reserve that level up passively. The classic Data-Vaccine-Virus rock-paper-scissor type matchup remains, layered with elemental affinities and status mechanics discovered through trial and error. Battles include options such as targeting specific body parts on bosses and applying buffs to active party units, though buffs don’t carry over to reserves. Players can also adjust combat speed up to 5x.

Moreover, each Digimon has innate "special" skills, and players can purchase additional "attachment" abilities in shops. Equippable items, stat enhancements, and level thresholds support branching evolutions that can be chosen via a column interface. With over 450 Digimon to train—surpassing the combined roster of Cyber Sleuth and Hacker’s Memory—Time Stranger offers the largest Digimon selection in the series. The player inventory caps at a generous 999 Digimon, all of which gain experience, albeit at a reduced rate if not in active use.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger Trivia

⚫︎ Though officially announced in 2025, the game was teased as far back as 2017. Producer Ryosuke Hara noted that the development team remade almost all 450+ Digimon models from scratch to meet modern hardware standards, retiring models used since the PS2/PSP era.
⚫︎ If players choose the male protagonist (Dan), the female protagonist (Kanan) becomes their radio support, and vice-versa. They are fully voiced during missions, providing a constant buddy dynamic similar to Hacker's Memory.
⚫︎ Certain Digimon can be used as rideable mounts to travel faster (like Beelzemon on his motorcycle or MetalGarurumon), but evolving can actually lose them this ability. For example, players can ride a Growlmon, but once it evolves into the massive WarGrowlmon, it is too large/unstable to mount.
