In case you haven’t heard, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is free-to-play! With limitations of course. Read on to learn more about the details of the free-to-play version as well as how to access it.
Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is Free-to-Play!
Cygames and Arc System Works announced that the game will be going with a freemium model, where the game will be free-to-play but have limited features. The Free Edition will have limited access to certain modes but will have complete online play available. I already recommended to purchase Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising and you can read our full review in the link below to see why. But if you're still on the fence about paying full price for the game, or if your budget is a little tight this month, the Free version should help you get a good idea of how the game plays and if the extra features are worth it.
Let’s go over how to download the free version, as well as all of the limits on the available modes and features compared to the paid version!
How to Get Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising Free Edition

Now that we have the game downloading, it's time to talk about the limits of the various modes and features that you'll be getting when playing the Free Edition.
Game Mode Limitations and Access
As mentioned earlier, the game will have limited features but will still have some essential modes available for players to have fun in the game.
Gran and 3 Rotational Characters
The game will have 4 playable characters, 3 of which will rotate on a weekly basis. On the other hand, Gran, the main protagonist of the series, will always be available to play. This means that you will only be allowed to play and learn the other characters at a limited time unless you buy the full version.
Starting things off, the GBVSR Twitter(X) account revealed the 3 rotational characters for launch week: Djeeta, Zeta, and Siegfried. During the beta test, these characters were considered some of the easier characters to pick-up-and-play. Siegfried has the added benefit of being a brand new character in this series’ iteration.
Limited Training Mode
The Training Mode will be limited to the essential tools such as the frame data and dummy recording. Character Matchup and Usage guides will not be available for the Free Edition.
Part 1 Story Mode Only
If you were planning on buying the game for the new Story Mode then you’re out of luck, since only the 1st part will be available for free. The first part will be the initial story of Granblue Fantasy Versus and will not have the new story that they advertised.
Default Figures for Figure Studio
The Figure Studio will only have default objects and 2 available figures of Gran and Djeeta. You will still be able to create dioramas but these will be very limited.
Default Lobby Avatars
For your Lobby Avatar you will not be able to change the default avatar of Gran in a plain white tee and shorts. Personally, this avatar is already pretty good as this is already pretty unique as compared to the normal chibi avatars of the other characters.
Limited Profile Customization
Your profile will also be limited in the customization as you cannot change most of the badges.
Character and Legend Level Cap (80/40)
Character Level will be capped at level 80 and will not progress further from there. This means that certain cosmetics will be locked out, since colors and weapon skins are tied to your Character Level. On the other hand, your Legend Level will be capped to 40, meaning cosmetics and rewards from the new "Grand Bruise Legends!" game mode will be limited.
No Access to Room Matches
The biggest drawback personally will be not having access to Room Matches or Private Lobbies in the Free Edition. This means that if you want to match up with your friends, you’ll have to take it to the Online Public Lobbies and duke it out there.
Included Game Modes
Finally, you have full access to several game modes, namely:
● Arcade Mode
● Versus Mode
● Ranked Matches
● Casual Matches
● Crossplay
● Online Lobbies
● Grand Bruise Legends!
● Replays
Having access to Arcade Mode and Versus Mode is already pretty good as they can already have you playing offline and having fun learning characters at your leisure, but the inclusion of Online matchmaking is what really makes it amazing.
With full access to Ranked, Casual, and Online Lobbies, you have the opportunity to be able to play and experience GBVSR’s online modes without spending a single dime! This means you’re able to grind your way up the ranks and work on your game completely for free. To cap it off, if you ever decide to buy the full game, your save data will be transferred which means your progression will still be carried over.
