The Spirit of the Samurai Gameplay
The Spirit of the Samurai is a 2.5D action adventure side-scroller game mixed with platforming and Metroidvania elements. Players will control three different playable characters with vastly differing playstyles. Takeshi, the Japanese samurai, can wield his katana, spear, and bow and arrow to fend off his enemies. Using an extensively customisable skill combo system, he will be able to perform different strings of attacks suited for varying situations. He can also perfectly time parries to stun enemies and allow for a counter-attack.
When available, Takeshi could call upon Chisai, the warrior cat to provide support while battling enemies. However, if Takeshi is nowhere to be found, Chisai can only stealthily hide and scurry away from enemies in order to reach safety.
Lastly, Kodama is a spirit infused with Takeshi’s samurai spirit, and they will claim all his abilities when being controlled. However, they will only be able to engage in combat with smaller enemies, forcing escape from foes larger than themselves.
The Spirit of the Samurai Story
The Spirit of the Samurai follows Takeshi, a Japanese samurai who strives to protect his village from an incoming invasion of an Oni and their army comprised of the undead, the tengu, and the bewitching Jorogumo. As he heads towards the Oni’s castle to take the leader down, he is met with two kindred spirits– Chisai, a warrior cat, and Kodama, a brave but tiny spirit.
Along the way, the samurai eventually finds himself in a battle which he cannot win, and perishes gruesomely. However, in his last moments, Kitsune, the spirit of the forest, opens the way for Takeshi to transfer his soul to his companions, Chisai or Kodama. Now, the three must work together with Takashi’s spirit to transfer between one another, and to another living body accordingly in order to achieve their quest of taking down the Oni.
