Despite the score, Starfield is not a terrible game. It improves a lot of looter shooter mechanics Bethesda established in Fallout 4. The fact that they were able to make a space game with the Gamebryo engine, which they’ve used since The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, is nothing short of astounding. It’s also one of the least buggiest launches Bethesda has had in years. That said, Starfield could’ve been something better, were it not hobbled by its dry and generic art style, a flawed and non-immersive exploration system, and an unsatisfying main story.

Starfield
Release Date Gameplay & Story Pre-Order & DLC Review

Starfield is an open-world action RPG where players build crews, explore the Solar System and gather Artifacts that hint at a bigger multiverse. Read on to learn how it plays, what it's about, and everything else we know so far.

Starfield Gameplay

Space Exploration

A major focus of Starfield's gameplay is exploring the Sol System, an interplanetary system comprised of multiple planets with their own unique areas to navigate and artifacts to collect. Players will move between planets through flying in space ships, which will have its own set of vehicle controls. Planets and areas in Starfield will also have enemies and hazards to fight through with the game's combat system.

Player and Ship Customization

Much like Bethesda's other open-world action RPGs, Starfield features a full suite of character customization options to make the player character unique to everyone. Starfield allows players to customize their characters' looks, body type, and background, all of which will affect their stats in combat and general gameplay.

Starfield also allows players to customize their ship, the Frontier, at specific space ports. The ship's weapon systems, shields, and general movement speed can be increased and customized, while specific parts can be swapped out and changed for a number of different upgrades, such as increased crew capacity or faster hyperspace jumps.

Combat and Skills

Starfield features both third-person and first-person shooting mechanics, bolstered by movement options such as jetpacks and the differing gravity levels per planet. Players can modify and customize their weapons for any gameplay scenario and combat approach, with the game featuring everything from guns to melee weapons.

Similar to other Bethesda games, players can use different skill trees and perks in Starfield to customize their character's approach to combat. Levelling up a character's skills is the main form of character progression in Starfield, and the 5 main skill categories Physical, Social, Combat, Science, and Tech all unlock different skills that uniquely affect gameplay.

Companions

Image

Starfield features a crew system where players can gather different companions for their ship, all of which bring along different gameplay perks and unique questlines, including the ability to romance some of them. These companions can accompany the player character on expeditions to different planets.

Starfield Story Plot

Starfield Story

Image

Starfield sees the player character as a space miner who has been commissioned by the Constellation, a famous group of space explorers, to locate an Artifact. After securing the Artifact, the player receives visions of the multiverse and is attacked by the Crimson Fleet, an organization of space-faring pirates. The player joins the Constellation after surviving the attack to find more Artifacts and learn the meaning behind these visions.

Starfield Setting

Image

Starfield is generally set around the Sol System, an interplanetary system inspired by our real life solar system. Players will explore each of the 9 main planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto, alongside their 21 moons.
