Showa American Story Gameplay
Not much has been revealed nor confirmed about the full scope of Showa American Story’s gameplay. However, the released trailer revealed standard fare action-adventure mechanics such as exploration, beat ‘em up combat, story and side quests, and minigames for players to while away some of the time while simultaneously making Chouko, the game’s protagonist, stronger.
Show American Story’s combat is of the hack-and-slash variety, giving players an entire arsenal of weapons to choose from, and a straightforward moveset to facilitate quick and intuitive battles. Chouko can pull out different kinds of melee weapons or even switch to ranged ones such as shotguns to kill enemies from a distance. Other times, players will have access to unconventional weapons, such as the giant drill Chouko is seen wielding in the trailer.
The otherwise familiar combat is punctuated by over-the-top and in-your-face gore, making each battle a veritable splatterfest typically found in 80s action and horror B-movies. Outside of battle, players can take advantage of the respite provided by Chouko’s RV, where she can engage in a variety of activities such as working out, cooking, and engaging in random hobbies like walking on stilts.
Showa American Story Story Plot
Showa American Story takes place in an alternate universe in which post-war Japan overtook the United States of America as an economic powerhouse. Japanese migrants eventually moved to America en masse until their culture had fully assimilated into American culture. This new era, dubbed Showa 66—a play on real-life Japan’s own post-war Showa era and, presumably, America’s iconic Route 66—gave birth to Showa America, a projected capitalist paradise created from the harmony between two cultures.
However, Showa America fell victim to a mysterious catastrophic event, one that reduced the country to a post-apocalyptic free-for-all among humans, zombies, and monsters alike. Players will experience this new land through the eyes of Chouko Chigusa, a 19-year-old stuntwoman who has risen from the dead with no memory of what had happened to her or to what was once Showa America. In order to find the answers she seeks, Chouko will have to set out on a wild and dangerous adventure, encountering enemies and meeting new friends.
