Marathon is attempting to rebuild goodwill by avoiding past Bungie mistakes, such as content vaulting. More recently, players have also been pulled into a massive ARG surrounding the game’s next map.
Marathon Promises Evergreen Content to Avoid Destiny 2’s Vaulting Issues
Bungie Says Marathon Won’t Use Content Vaulting

After a mostly positive Server Slam reception and official launch, Marathon’s next step toward rewarding its player base for the long haul is avoiding the controversial "content vaulting" system that Bungie’s previous looter-shooter game, Destiny 2, became notorious for.
Before Bungie’s Marathon was around, one of the hot topics among the Destiny 2 community was the introduction of "content vaulting," a system that removes older material from the base game to make room for new additions, rendering some content unplayable for both new and returning players. Earlier campaigns, such as the original Destiny 2 storyline "Red War," were eventually removed to accommodate newer expansions like Beyond Light.
Although Bungie promised that content placed in the "DCV," or Destiny Content Vault, could return in some form in the future, the fear of missing out (FOMO) remained a dealbreaker for some players. Adding salt to the wound, seasonal content and battle pass rewards were also locked away once a new expansion launched, leaving parts of the community frustrated.

Bungie Creative Director Julia Nardin explained in an interview with astronomy website Space.com that all content in Marathon "aims to be evergreen" to ensure that newer players will not miss out on experiences even after multiple seasons have passed.
Nardin added that, as a live-service game, the team wants Marathon to be "an addictive experience." Even players who join later will "still be able to play through established questlines and fill out [their] Codex with achievements and collections."
Marathon’s Biggest ARG May Be Close to Being Solved

While the Marathon developers discussed content vaulting, the community has also been busy tackling a mysterious puzzle believed to lead to the game’s elusive fourth map aboard the eponymous Marathon ship.
The ARG (Alternate Reality Game) reportedly became active a day after the game’s launch on March 5, activating several Marathon terminals scattered across Perimeter and Dire Marsh, two of the game’s current maps. Fans believe these terminals are key to unlocking the game’s endgame location, the Cryo Chambers, located within the derelict Marathon ship orbiting the planet Tau Ceti IV.

Over the past few days, players have been searching for clues and solutions to the sprawling puzzle. Some Marathon secret hunters, such as content creator MrRoflWaffles, invited curious players to join dedicated Discord channels and streams to help crack the mystery.
After several days of investigation, players have somehow cracked the code behind the bizarre ARG, leading them to a website called Cryoarchive Systems. The site allows players to view multiple security camera feeds from what appears to be inside the Marathon ship’s Cryo Archives, giving players a first look at its possible locations, such as Cargo, Control, and Index Rooms.

As of writing, only four camera feeds are online; the remaining ones require an activation method that is currently unknown. Players have begun pitching various theories on how to unlock them, with one of the more widely discussed ideas suggesting that additional feeds could be triggered by defeating more UESC robots in PvE encounters.
The mystery, however, remains unsolved. While more players continue searching for ways to activate the remaining cameras and open the doors of the Marathon ship, the investigation has largely hit a wall for now. Still, the community’s persistence may ultimately be the key to unlocking what lies inside.
