Bandai Namco Announced New Sword Art Online Title, Echoes of Aincrad
Releases July 10, 2026
Echoes of Aincrad, a new Sword Art Online (SAO) action RPG, has been announced by Bandai Namco. As revealed across Bandai’s social media accounts on March 4, this upcoming title will take on "darker" themes that are based on the anime’s original setting, the Aincrad castle.
The studio teased the game earlier this week, enticing fans with a short video captioned "A serenity soon to be disturbed." While many speculated that it pointed to a new Tales entry or a sequel to the 2021 hit JRPG Scarlet Nexus, a new SAO title remained a top prediction, as the video previewed a pillar reminiscent of the anime’s Aincrad castle

The SAO prediction is also accentuated by the fact that the franchise’s publisher, Kadokawa, filed a trademark for "Echoes of Aincrad," in Japan in April 2025. The filing was categorized under Classes 9 and 41, which are classifications commonly associated with video games and other electronic entertainment services.
Bandai Namco has produced a plethora of SAO console titles over the years, with notable examples including Infinity Moment (2013), Hollow Realization (2016), Alicization Lycoris (2020), and Fractured Daydream (2024). They have also developed several spin-offs and mobile games, such as Integral Factor (2017), Variant Showdown (2022), and Accel World vs. Sword Art Online (2017).
Welcome to the Floating Castle of Aincrad

According to its Steam page, Echoes of Aincrad features avatar customization, where players create their own hero and enter the world of SAO. The vibrant yet perilous floating castle of Aincrad demands both strategic gear management and combat mastery, as these are the vital elements that determine a player's survivability.
As the journey progresses, the experience emphasizes the importance of building synergy with a chosen partner to overcome increasingly difficult challenges. By leveling up and securing victories, players unlock powerful new abilities and expand their horizons within the castle's mysterious floors.
One notable inclusion is the "Death Game Mode," which appears on the game’s Steam page as an "Early Unlock." Bandai Namco have yet to detail the said feature, but the name suggests a high-stakes experience where character death results in permanent data deletion, directly leaning into the death-game-esque nature of the original series’ lore.

Pre-orders for Echoes of Aincrad are now officially open. It is available in three versions: the Standard Edition for $69.99, the Deluxe Edition for $89.99, and the Ultimate Edition priced at $109.99.
The Deluxe Edition includes the Expansion DLC, currently slated for a December 31, 2026, release, along with a Starter Pack featuring in-game items to jumpstart the player's journey. Additionally, this version provides an early unlock for the "Death Game Mode."

The collector’s items include a branded beanie, a high-quality wall scroll, a set of embroidered patches, and a themed sticker pack. To ensure fair availability, Bandai Namco has implemented a strict limit of two units per customer.
