REMATCH Overall - 74100
REMATCH is the ultimate arcade soccer game we’ve been waiting for. When it works. The mechanics and fun factor are all there, and the fact that all players play on equal footing is already commendable. It’s an arcade game that puts a spin on the actual sport and turns it into fast-paced 6-8 minute matches instead.
However, the current state of the game is still questionable, as both the server and the game’s stability have been crashing during early access repeatedly. If Sloclap can resolve these issues soon enough, REMATCH is well on its way to becoming the next big online competitive sports game.
REMATCH Story - 5/10
Seeing that the game is primarily an arcade game, there’s not much to say about the game’s story aspect. There is, however, a prologue sequence that acts as a tutorial to the mechanics of the game and a short cinematic showing your character’s journey as he develops from an individualistic street football player to a team-oriented one that makes it to the big leagues. There is no dialogue or narration throughout the cinematic, but you can see what they were trying to accomplish with the short cinematic.
REMATCH Gameplay - 9/10
In terms of gameplay, REMATCH is a breath of fresh air. There hasn’t been an arcade sports game, let alone a football game, that has as satisfying a feel as this game offers. While the controls seem unintuitive at first, it only takes a few matches and maybe some time in the game’s free practice area to get a decent grasp of what each input does and how to utilize them. With the altered rules of soccer, REMATCH is a game that rewards players who understand the inner workings of the game.
That being said, it’s currently plagued by a ton of issues, both related to network stability and performance. Crashes and disconnects happen constantly and result in a team with a disadvantage. There are also a couple of bugs that happen during a match, like the opponent taking possession after successfully scoring. Hopefully, Sloclap can fix these issues quickly so that players can enjoy the game as it’s meant to be played.
REMATCH Visuals - 9/10
With the animated aesthetic and the use of special effects, it brings out that arcade feel that hasn’t been around for a long time. In true Sloclap fashion, the visuals focus on the movement of the characters, especially on the limbs.
As a result, everything is well animated, which is important for a sports game, let alone a competitive one. The only nitpick there is about the visuals is the distracting stadiums and their coloring, as these may blend in with a team’s colorway and lead to problems in some cases.
REMATCH Audio - 7/10
The audio design is also good, especially when you realize that you can use certain sound effects to your advantage. Some elements may need a little adjustment, like the volume of the sound effects, and maybe more oomph to certain maneuvers. There’s also the matter of the music being repetitive, but it does capture the feel of the game, especially as the clock ticks down. It’s not the best aspect by any means, but it does its job to make the game more satisfying to play.
REMATCH Value for Money - 7/10
Priced at $29.99, it’s difficult to justify an online live service game that isn’t free. It can be argued that the game is unique and one-of-a-kind, especially since there’s no competitive arcade sports game in recent times. Taking all of that aside, however, the game is in a rough state due to the unstable servers and its numerous bugs. Yes, there are drills and solo free play included, but there’s no point in playing the game if it crashes after every game or if someone else disconnects.

REMATCH Review: A Rough Hat-Trick
Arcade sports games have been a thing of the past, and one could consider them a dying genre since most sports games have focused on simulation instead. To put things into an even more specific perspective, there hasn’t been another arcade soccer game other than the Captain Tsubasa series, or the closest adjacent being Rocket League. While these games are good in their own right, they’re very out there and not exactly grounded in the sport when it comes to the gameplay.
Thankfully, the folks over at Sloclap decided to take their talents and try their hand at developing a new arcade soccer game with REMATCH. Is it worth the hype? Can it revive the genre? Turns out it might be able to, but not without its problems.
Top-Notch Visuals
Visually speaking, Sloclap did a wonderful job in using the animated art style paired with the vibrant colors to show off the game’s aesthetic. On top of that, the characters are amazingly animated, and you can clearly see the inspiration behind the movements. Additionally, it also has a ton of indicators to help players with clarity, especially since there will be a ton of action when duels and scrambles happen during a match.
While the stadiums are also beautifully made and crafted, some of them can be a tad distracting. Of course, stadiums are a player preference, and Sloclap could consider an option to set the default stadium as a setting in ranked matches or in competitive play. Another option would be to add a toggle to lessen special visual effects to make things a lot less flashy when stadiums shift or when a goal happens.
Total Arcade Football
The best part about REMATCH is that it's Total Football
taken to an extreme level. For the uninitiated, Total Football is a theoretical tactic that lets players interchange their roles at any given moment, popularized by the Netherlands national team in the ‘70s. In a similar sense, the game doesn’t have set roles and even lets players change goalkeepers freely during a match. While this may prove to be a chaotic case of all ten players wanting to be a striker, it creates interesting strategies when you know how to use the mechanics.
For example, skilled players can utilize the interchangeable goalkeeper system to reposition and adapt to an offensive situation. The special thing about goalkeepers in the game is that they have infinite stamina to run around as long as they’re the last line of defense on their team. Additionally, there are a ton of other mechanics that can be used to your advantage, like the use of wall passes and the different passing options to get around defenses.
It’s an elevated way of integrating the real concepts and moves of the actual sport and turning it into a video game, which is personally impressive.

Let Your Skills Do the Talking
One thing that REMATCH does absolutely right is that everyone is on equal footing when it comes to playing the game. Additionally, everything that the game offers is purely cosmetic, and there are no alterable parameters to directly influence your play. This means that a player who just bought the game will be on par with someone who’s been playing the game for years. Interactions like duels are skill-based and will require players to read their opponents to win the interaction. A more experienced player will definitely mop the floor with a new player who doesn’t know how to defend against a rainbow flick.
Does this mean that the game is difficult to play or pick up? Surprisingly, not. With the game itself offering single-player drills and a tutorial to teach the controls, picking up the game and learning how to use the different moves isn’t very hard. Sure, it might take a few matches to understand how to fully utilize the maneuvers you can pull off, but I can confidently say that after two to three matches, you can already play the game and have experience using the mechanics.
Network and Performance Issues
Now, the main issue of the game at hand and one that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. As of writing this review, it currently has a lot of network issues and performance problems. Every other match had either a disconnected player who couldn’t return to the game or it crashed without warning. Desyncs were also frequent during gameplay, which made it hard to defend and react at a moment’s notice.
Additionally, there are also bugs that break the game. One of which was a wrong possession bug that gives the ball back to the scoring team when it should be the other way around. While one possession may not be the end of the match, this can potentially ruin close games.
For a live-service game, this is unacceptable. Not only are you barred from enjoying 90% of the game, you’re also at risk of being abruptly stopped when you get to play. These are the issues that Sloclap needs to prioritize in fixing so that the game can actually be successful. So while the cosmetics don't affect anything in the game, it seems disingenious to keep promoting the game's cash shop when the game is still in a very rough state.
On the Corridor of Uncertainty Until Resolved
So is REMATCH worth the hype? Yes. Can it revive the genre of arcade sports games? Possibly. But not right now. If anything, they need to focus on fixing the servers and the common bugs to ensure a smooth launch. Let’s make it clear. REMATCH is undoubtedly amazing for its gameplay and visuals, but no one’s going to enjoy that if they keep crashing and disconnecting while playing the game. I have my fingers crossed that Sloclap can fix these issues so that everyone can enjoy the game as intended.

Is REMATCH Worth It?
Park the Bus Until the Issues are Fixed.
No matter how fun REMATCH may be, the network issues and game-affected bugs are frustrating to deal with. There’s not much in the game other than playing with others, so having these issues is a major roadblock to the game’s success. Until these issues are resolved, we recommend holding off on the purchase since it will only end up with you being frustrated with the frequent crashes and disconnects.
Once resolved, REMATCH is worth it to pick up. It’s great for those looking for some sort of competitive sports game that isn’t Rocket League, Madden, NBA 2K, or EA FC. It captures the feeling of playing the sport while making it easier to get into due to its quick pace and easy-to-understand mechanics.
