Neverness to Everness Gameplay

Combat

NTE combat footage of Mint unleashing melee attacks on an enemy, area is a surreal urban road dominated by neon pink and blue ink

Neverness to Everness’ combat system is real-time and action-oriented, with players managing a party of up to four characters that use normal attacks, skills, and ultimates to defeat enemies, similar to other popular mobile RPGs such as Wuthering waves and Genshin Impact. However, there’s also the Esper Cycle, a synergy mechanic. This system allows players to trigger powerful reactions by using abilities in a specific order, much like the element combos found in the aforementioned ARPGs.

Players can swap characters mid-battle to chain combos. Landing hits and successful dodges build an enemy's stagger bar. When filled, enemies enter a vulnerable state, significantly increasing the damage they take. The recent NTE Containment Test introduced a parry system and character-specific dodge-counter mechanics, both implemented based on player feedback from earlier tests.

Exploration

Neverness to Everness also has an open-world urban environment. Here, players explore Hethereau using a wide range of movement options. They can walk, sprint, jump, climb, and even wall-run, with some enabled by character-specific Esper abilities like anti-gravity.

Traversal appears to be seamless. Climbing walls, entering buildings, gliding, and driving vehicles occur without loading screens. Moreover, vehicle mechanics include third-person and optional first-person modes, customizable parts that affect handling, color, and decals, and realistic damage systems that require repairs. Driving is also impacted by variables like weather, with realistic handling and traffic AI.

However, there are also various public transportation options in Hethereau, including an extensive train network, for those who prefer not damage their cars or steal other people’s, à la Grand Theft Auto.

Life Simulation

The game, however, also includes non-combat simulation elements. Players can purchase and decorate apartments or houses and furnish them to their personal taste. There’s a business-management layer where players can run shops (handling inventory, pricing, and so on, for instance) and manage vehicles and properties as sources of revenue. Owners can personalize vehicles via upgrades that affect both aesthetics and performance.

Earnings can be used to purchase vehicles, furniture, and, most notably, houses. Homes range from modest apartments to mansions and can be customized with a variety of decorations.

Crime System

Committing a crime in the world will increase the player's wanted level and draw the pursuit of the police, akin to the system seen in the GTA series. When caught, they'll be thrown into a detention center where they can work their way out or plan a breakout.

NTE Containment Test Preview

Image

NTE’s Containment Test text announcement, with the tagline Welcome to Hethereau, black background (a closed PC beta running July 3-16, 2025) takes the groundwork laid by earlier technical tests and significantly expands the scope and polish of what players can experience. The city of Hethereau is now 1.5x larger, with two new districts, Miguel and New Herland. The update also brings better visuals (compared to previous tests). NPCs exhibit more lifelike behaviors, animals interact dynamically, and public transit systems (like trams and buses) are now functioning.

Players have access to two new main story quests, "Deal? Deal!" and a spin-off involving Lacrimosa, plus three new playable characters: Hotori (time-controlling Esper), Baicang (martial arts captain with support abilities), and Hathor (speed-focused Esper).

NTE Scarborough Fair gacha board, a tiled landscape akin to games like Mario Party

Probably what sets NTE apart from many gacha games is the revamped Scarborough Fair gacha board. Instead of conventional pulls, players roll dice to navigate a board and trigger chests and events that can yield characters, materials, or extra rolls. A soft pity system ensures S-class character rates improve after 70 rolls, with guarantees kicking in by 89 if needed.

Crucially, NTE has officially confirmed there is no 50/50 system for S-class characters on limited banners. This means that when you do pull an S-class character on a limited banner, it is always guaranteed to be the featured banner S-class character, unlike many other gacha games, where you might have a 50% chance of getting a standard character instead.

Neverness to Everness Story

NTE a tall red-masked anomaly in the shape of a tall suited man approaching the camera, it holds a black umbrella with long red hands stretching from its ends, set during an urban district during nighttime

Neverness to Everness follows a system similar to other live service RPGs, where the primary story takes place in episodic main quests, with certain ones being level-locked. Each of these has players take on cases where they must investigate and resolve anomalies.

Neverness to Everness Plot

In Hethereau, supernatural anomalies and everyday urban life coexist. As an Appraiser, players are tasked with investigating these anomalies, manifestations that range from disturbances to overtly dangerous phenomena, and using Esper abilities to contain or neutralize them.

As the Appraiser delves deeper into the anomalies, they encounter a rotating cast of companions with their own Esper powers that are crucial for unraveling the larger mysteries of Hethereau. These characters help reveal how the anomalies affect different parts of the city and its inhabitants. Their interactions and investigations gradually uncover a layered web of cause and effect behind the supernatural occurrences.

Neverness to Everness Setting

NTE a district in Hethereau lit by buildings, cars, and lampposts, Skia, Fadia, and Lacrimosa can be seen at the bottom

Neverness to Everness(NTE) takes place within the expansive urban city of Hethereau, where the world is filled with supernatural Anomalies that manifest in its streets and alleys, essentially coexisting with its inhabitants. Our crew of protagonists arrive onto the scene and must utilize their Esper powers to deal with and contain many of the Anomalies that appear and cause trouble for the cityfolk. Players will control a wide variety of interchangeable characters to investigate, fight, and explore the urban landscape of Hethereau!
