Megacopter is a fun and destructive spend of time that brandishes refined throwback graphics and a gameplay system that allows for various ways to cause mayhem– only if you get past or get used to the awkward controls that inhibit maximum enjoyment. The controls and aiming feel counterintuitive to the objective fun playstyle that could be had from Megacopter, and prevents it from reaching a much higher altitude of chaotic destruction, whereas its other facets of story, art, and more importantly its music are perfect as they are for what the game entails.

Play as Jack Copter and control the sentient Megacopter to eliminate the incoming Reptoid invasion! Read our review to see how well it does its strengths, some areas for improvement, and if you should get it for yourself.

Megacopter Overall - 80/100

Megacopter is a fun and destructive spend of time that brandishes refined throwback graphics and a gameplay system that allows for various ways to cause mayhem– only if you get past or get used to the awkward controls that inhibit maximum enjoyment. The controls and aiming feel counterintuitive to the objective fun playstyle that could be had from Megacopter, and prevents it from reaching a much higher altitude of chaotic destruction, whereas its other facets of story, art, and more importantly its music are perfect as they are for what the game entails.

Megacopter Story - 6/10

Megacopter is a living sentient attack helicopter that craves human heart sacrifices and murdering lizard people, and that’s an apt summary of the vibe its story, characters, and dialogue brings to the table. It has that endearing "funny because it’s random and quirky" vibe to it that was rampant in the early 2010s, and it suits the throwback theme of the game. Besides, it doesn’t really need to grip you into a story, since you’re really just here to blow stuff up with your helicopter and cause mayhem.

Megacopter Gameplay - 7/10

Megacopter has so much variety and chaotic potential for fun and mayhem, but it’s held back by its awkward controls, aiming, and camera that go against clarity and ease to actually cause said fun chaos and mayhem. You’d need to slow down to properly aim at enemies, but with the frantic amount of bullets that chase after you, you’d also have no chance to do so, forcing you to be always on the move and struggling to precisely aim at moving ground and air targets.

Megacopter Visuals - 8/10

Megacopter is full of great retro art that harken back to the classics it's inspired from, all with a modern touch of refinement that instills this feeling of duality between nostalgia and a new experience. It's entirely consistent with its art direction that accomplishes its mission of creating a modern helicopter shoot ‘em with throwback graphics. However, due to the sometimes frenetic nature of the camera and helicopter movement speed, you’d need to slow down to actually appreciate all the art– something you can seldom do with all the constant barrage of attacks you’ll be dodging.

Megacopter Audio - 9/10

Megacopter has a brilliantly energetic and moody synth/electro soundtrack composed by OGRE sound known for their synth expertise. The subtle hums rhythmically pumping as you peacefully fly over terrain that transition to upbeat combat music as you start engaging with enemies is perfect. The sound effects of all weapons and powers also pack their appropriate punches that make you feel powerful as this demonic sentient helicopter bent on destruction. The only negative throughout the game, audio wise, is that it feels like some tracks get repeated too often and that there isn’t enough variety. And speaking of repeating, when songs reach their end, they don’t seamlessly loop back, and instead you can hear hard stops and starts as it cuts and commences again.

Megacopter Value for Money - 10/10

As of writing, Megacopter is priced at $15.99. In its current state, Megacopter has tons of campy and destructive fun to be had but is only held back by a few issues stemming from its aiming controls and camera, which can always be fixed with additional settings options. However, until then, it will be quite difficult for players to get used to the struggle-filled gameplay of moving while aiming in two different planes as the camera hurts your eyes. But even with these downfalls, Megacopter sits at a perfect price for what it is.

Pros of Megacopter

Things Megacopter Got Right
Checkmark Great Retro Art and Graphics
Checkmark Energetic Soundtrack

Great Retro Art and Graphics

Megacopter might not have the most mind blowing triple A graphics, but it invokes a natural sense of nostalgia through its somewhat ‘crude’ art style and direction, from the menus, to the cutscene animatics, to the character illustrations, and to the gameplay’s sprite work. Each work hand-in-hand to deliver a throwback game that perfectly encapsulates the games it took inspiration from, bringing into the modern age a fitting version of a classic genre of shoot ‘em ups one rarely sees in this day and age.

Energetic Soundtrack

Megacopter has employed the services of OGRE Sound for their soundtrack, who has created synth compositions that perfectly evoke the needed vibes for this throwback game. Although past games of this action helicopter shoot ‘em ups tend to have had more upbeat rock or metal music and the like in the past, the synthwave direction is a welcome change and modern take to the genre–and it absolutely works.

The steady rhythmic beats that ring as you fly over the world at a steady pace, to then have a building crescendo that reaches its climax as you engage with enemies is just a ‘chef’s kiss’ of a feature.

Cons of Megacopter

Things Megacopter Can Improve
Checkmark Awkward Controls
Checkmark Nauseating Camera

Awkward Controls

The main problem that was very obtrusive was the hard deadzone underneath the helicopter at all times, prohibiting from aiming the land reticle to any enemies below it any chances it gets. However, it goes about it by changing the trajectory of your aim for you, subtly adjusting and sliding it around some pixels or so. This might seem insignificant, but usually when one swipes straight in a direction, they have this expectation where they know the path their cursor takes and where their reticle might land. However, with the implementation in Megacopter, if looking at the footage above, swiping left to right, top to down, and vice versa alters the trajectory and landing spots by a few paces. Again, this might look insignificant, but having this baked in mechanical sense in most players gets subtly obfuscated over and over again throughout the game as you need to react and aim quickly across different directions becomes a struggle. It’s perfectly understandable if a game design choice the developers want to stick to would be to now allow players to land fire underneath the helicopters, and so another solution could be to just disengage any kind of fire automatically if the reticle suddenly goes underneath it. It would greatly improve the freedom to aim as well as remove any obstructions from aiming on land.

Speaking of aiming on land, this could be a skill issue or a "need to get used to it for a while" issue, but the disparity between aiming at land targets and airborne targets is a confusing time. Aiming up or down is so much easier than aiming from the side, as the camera and world is at an angle, and the land reticle where players might get used to aiming with won’t be able to easily adjust when having to handle air targets.

Lastly, speaking of reticles, once more and more enemies with their own projectiles, bullets, and even the kitchen sink are all being thrown into the sky, your aiming reticles are so easily lost in the heat of battle that it gets so chaotic, confusing, and nauseating to navigate. Speaking of nauseating navigation…

Nauseating Camera

Megacopter unfortunately makes one of the usual mistakes in modern games where they hard-link the camera onto the player’s model and movement, where every subtle action you make, the camera immediately directly moves in the same direction with no smoothing at all. It causes this very janky and nauseating feeling after a while as you continuously dodge and weave between bullets and missiles across the sky.

Now, add to the fact that where you aim your reticle also influences how and where the camera shifts to reveal a wider area, and you got two separate camera variables constantly jittering and changing in a fast-paced environment where you HAVE to be constantly moving around and reaiming, and you got yourself something that will strain your eyes in the long run.

Is Megacopter Worth It?

Megacopter is definitely still a fun time to be had, with only a few inconveniences that greatly hold it back to nearly-flawlessly achieve what it’s aiming for– and that’s to be a great modern throwback game harkening to the classic retro games of old it's inspired by. By no means are the story, character, visuals, gameplay, or sound world shattering, but they all work in tandem to create a satisfying tribute and experience that fans of the genre or those who might be looking into the genre could get behind with.

However, as of now, there are still a few bolts and wires in the helicopter that need to be tightened and rewired, as there are a few aforementioned problems that hinder it from becoming ‘perfect’ in a way for a helicopter shoot ‘em up. Nevertheless, Megacopter is something one should look into purchasing if you find any one thing from the game interesting.
