Everwind Review (Demo)

When you ask someone what the best sandbox survival game out there is, there’s a range of different answers. Some might say Minecraft, others may say Terraria, and maybe people might say V Rising or something of the sort. In my case, I would prefer a focus on exploration and combat rather than the base-building aspect of the genre.
Regardless of the answer, we can all agree that there’s definitely a sandbox survival game for everyone out there; they just need to find what they prefer. But what if I told you that there’s an upcoming base-building sandbox survival game that lets you fly an airship and have it as a mobile base that you can constantly upgrade? Let me introduce you to Everwind, an ambitious sandbox survival RPG hybrid that yearns to explore the skies and sometimes the mines.
Looks Familiar, But With a Focus on Detail

In terms of looks, Everwind looks inspired by games with similar blocky pixelated graphics like Minecraft, Roblox, and more. The visuals aren’t necessarily groundbreaking, as most of what you see in the game can definitely be seen in other sandbox games. But what sets it apart is the detail in the character models and the different textures.
Don’t get me wrong, stunning
isn’t the word I would use to describe the game, but it does look different and detailed enough to be a breath of fresh air. Plus, seeing the airship in action and exploring more islands in the sky is a much different experience than the rest.
Currently, the demo doesn’t have too many different models just yet, mostly just skeletons, pheasants, capybaras, and the occasional boar. But it shows promise, especially since the developers have been actively showcasing their upcoming content through their dev logs.
Flying and Looting With Style

Survival games are pretty simple when it comes to the gameplay loop, and what separates each of them is the progression towards the endgame.
Everwind’s gameplay comprises you taking your airship to different islands and taking whatever is on that island. Using your spyglass, you can check if the island has a dungeon to explore for even more potential loot. One thing to highlight is that you will receive a compass that helps you scan points of interest on that island, as well as doubling as a teleporter to your airship.

Combat in Everwind is similar to games like Skyrim and Oblivion, where it’s a first-person perspective with a semblance of stamina management. Weapons range from swords, bows, magical staffs, and more as the game develops. Melee combat is pretty much similar to the mentioned titles; regular swings are quick but can be guarded, charged swings break guards but cost more stamina, etc. In contrast, ranged combat is even simpler, as it’s mostly just point and click.
The skill trees also point to a class system in the future, where players can specialize in 3 different classes, namely Warrior, Arcanist, and Engineer. While having classes will ultimately add variety to the gameplay, certain skills in the Warrior class, which is the only available class in the demo, should probably be moved around since some of these skills aren’t usable at the start.
Still Rough Around the Edges

Seeing that Everwind is still just a demo in its alpha stages, it’s not surprising that the game still doesn’t have a progression to look forward to, other than upgrading gear and your airship; however, what it does have shows promise, especially if they expand on dungeon crawling, looting islands, gear upgrades, combat encounters, classes, and even more airship-related things. Other than the progression, though, the game still needs a lot of polishing.
Many of the core functions you’d expect from a survival game are barebones. For example, inventory management is manual, so you’ll have to sort through your items one by one. Another thing is that you can’t craft multiple items, so you’ll have to craft items one at a time. There are also several bugs and issues that the demo had, like performance issues, network problems, and more.

Combat is still one-dimensional and is definitely something that should be improved on. As it stands, it’s just a case of swinging until the enemy dies. The different enemies should also be looked at, since rats were definitely some of the most troublesome things to fight against in the demo.
The Potential is Sky-High

Regardless, Everwind is a very promising multiplayer survival sandbox title. The whole theme of the game is very much something I adore, as it’s something similar to being a sky pirate with some adventuring on the side. Plus, there aren’t a lot of survival games that give you a mobile base to begin with, let alone let you be able to fly with it.
Of course, that might change in the future so that you have to earn your wings instead of them being handed to you. Before anything else, however, they’ll still need to fix, tweak, and improve many core systems like crafting convenience, inventory management, and more. I, for one, will be paying close attention to how things turn out, and hopefully, I'll have a new survival game to sink many hours into.
